yes I am, jc/da are not wings to me, i'm talking bout 6-7 to 6 10 type ATHLETES. Ingram is the only true wing I see on this team, Deng is old and slow now and probably better used as a stretch 4. Brown is Brown (terrible)
That's a pretty specific definition of "wing" then - I think of people who play the 2 or 3. Some of the most famous wings in the NBA wouldn't qualify - Bowen and Battier, for instance. They're not really athletes. I'm not sure Kobe was really 6'7" either - but he's clearly a wing. All that said, there's a reason to worry about whether you have wing depth (if by "wing" you mean what I mean - people who can play the 2 or 3). But it's not clear at all that you have to worry about whether you have WING depth (where you mean 6'7 to 6'10" athletes). I'm not sure it matters very much. BTW, isn't Nance a wing by your definition? Randle?
For reference what team is deep at the wing spot with the definition being 6'7" to 6'10" athletes? Just out of curiosity. I've always defined a wing player as someone who plays either SG or SF, but primarily SF who is typically between 6'4" (Gary Harris comes to mind) or 6'9" (Jeff Green comes to mind).
Are there any others in the league? Also Iggy is shorter than 6'7". He's listed at 6'6" but he's probably 6'5 or so. Klay is listed at 6'7" but I'd be shocked if he were actually that tall.
When I think of Clarkson, I think combo guard. I would ideally like to think of DAR as a point, but he is leaning towards the combo guard category since he is scoring so much. In years past, Deng to me is a classic wing - but at his age and decreased speed I think he'll see some time at 4 in small ball line ups. A "wing" to me is classically a 6'6 or 6'7 guy who can either shoot or attack the basket( SG-SF). I'm thinking Kobe, Klay, Ginobili, Iguodala, Barnes. The term positionless basketball has been thrown around a lot lately, but it's as relevant as as ever. In regards to height and skillset, there are definitely "prototypes" for each position, but even since the days of Magic there have been player who don't conveniently fit into a position. Clarkson is somewhat shorter, but functionally he does the things that a traditional wing would do, slash & attack the basket. But he also has and is capable of PG ball handling duties at times, which makes me think hes a combo guard. just my .02
Just did a search to see if any current Olympic highlights on our new stretch 5. Looks like only the top one. But here's a bunch of clips. Maybe his new manly man vs older girly man upper body physique will be evident? No offense to girly men everywhere. Introduced to American lexicon by SNL. Class action them. Olympic youtube highlights Yi Jianlian
He's better than Ryan Kelly. There you have it. Looks THICK and athletic as well. Probably more buff than years past. I like it. The acquisition. TALL. Long. This Guy wanted him.
If he starts taking minutes away from Black/Zublacca and has a Sacre/Kelly/Boozer/Weasley impact on the court (which is probably going to be the case) I'm going to lose my mind. I've had enough of seeing total scrubs play.
I'm glass 98% full guy on Luke. I do buy into the 3 moves ahead mental performance from him vs usual "best case" of 2 moves ahead done well. So he was there watching him and comparing him mentally to what he saw and did with the players in SF. He wanted Moz and he wanted this guy. Plus he wants Black. Luke's going to kick butt with big men maybe?
Jianlan will likely see minutes...not spot ones but nothing major either. He's more suited at the 4 but I hope it is not at the expense of Nance. I'm not sure if Jianlian can handle being glued to the pine either.
I think it's great if a system can be created where everyone's comfortable to do what they do best to the best of their abilities. And be reasonably consistent with good execution. Then play everyone maybe a few less minutes and go deeper into the roster and keep guys fresher all season. This is why I like Luke's supposed 3 moves ahead smarts per what Kobe saw before Luke even started coaching. Now he's got time in two years in a row in the NBA Finals plus the whole rest of the seasons at the highest level. Something we haven't had since Phil. Substitution patterns that worked and made sense. I'd hope to see a deeper rotation than Phil used to play if we have guys that can perform.
I'm with you LT, I questioned the Moz and now the Yi signing... but above all else I have trust in Luke. If Luke wanted them, he must have a plan for them. I like what his assistant was running during the summer league too. I think there is a legit reason for optimism.
