I just got back from The Infiltrator. If you're a fan of FBI dramas and enjoy the great Bryan Cranston, you'll enjoy this. Cranston is truly amazing. He's creeping into my top 10 best actors list of all time. I'd rate the movie a B-. Fine acting all the way around from Diane Kruger, Benjamin Bratt, and John Leguizamo.
No, I didn't. I asked some people before 10 Cloverfield Lane came out if I needed to see the first to understand this one but they said no. Would you recommend that I should?
Well it's a completely different style of movie, but I definitely enjoyed it and I'd recommend you watch it. In a way, yeah you didn't really need to watch the original to understand 10 Cloverfield Lane. BUT: Spoiler The original Cloverfield is a monster movie. A giant monster emerges from the sea and attacks New York City. Kind of like Godzilla. With hints that it's some sort of alien that was sent into the sea years ago in order to emerge at the right time for an attack. So when 10 Cloverfield Lane came out, the main intrigue was that people were wondering to what extent, if any, it would be related to the original. Would it just tie in thematically, or was it actually a part of the same universe? So if you didn't watch the original, the whole alien apocalypse probably seemed pretty cheesy. But for me, it was really cool because it confirmed that both movies are actually in the same universe. The monster in the first movie was just part of the aliens' plans and by now they've pretty much taken over the Earth and forced the remaining humans into hiding. I'm intrigued where they go next.
Above average action flick...quiet first quarter then bang, all hell breaks loose. Usual stuff...lead characters get really roughed up but make it through unscathed, bad guys never run out of...well, bad guys. I like Butler, no pretense, no camp. C+.
I thought 10 Cloverfield Lane wasn't connected to Cloverfield at all, like it's just a coincidence that the word Cloverfield is in both titles.
They're both produced by Bad Robot the company J.J. Abrams owns. Even though it makes no reference to the original, it's been confirmed that they are in fact in the same universe. At first it wasn't but they rewrote the script to tie it to the original Cloverfield. Not sure though if Cloverfield 10 is supposed to happen at roughly the same time or sometime after the original. I'm thinking after.
Anyone see Ghostbusters? I'm hearing from people that saw it that it was really lame and felt super forced. No one knows how it scored as high as it did on Rotten Tomatoes and they are already hypothesizing that critics didn't want to trash it for fear of being labeled sexist.
I haven't seen it, but it looks terrible from the trailers. I'm shocked it got decent reviews and I can totally see critics overrating it for fear of looking sexist.
Run of the mill storyboard of police corruption...mob ties and flawed anti-heroes. Among a notable ensemble cast, Woody Harrelson stood out while Kate Winslet just didn't do it for me as a Jewish Russian mob queen. C+
I like both Olympus and London, it's Gerry's take on the Die Hard franchise essentially. Sadly, both Olympus and London have been a hell of a lot better than the past two Die Hard installments. Not sure where they could go with the franchise from here, but if they decide to make another one then I'm definitely seeing it.
I saw the new Star Trek movie yesterday and its... well it's very fun but it's not by any stretch a great movie. I also thought they worked hard to make it feel very much a "Star Trek" story in the way it's told and all that. I'd recommend it to Star Trek fans and it's definitely worth a watch if you just want to have a good time at the theater and you're a fan of science fiction.
Agree that it is better than the last two Die Hard offerings. Willis doesn't have the same pull he used to have. I liked Olympus more than London. The latter was just like any sequel where it tried to outdo the first with more explosions and all that. Too much style over substance. Butler and Gerard play off each other pretty well. Freeman and Angela Bassett are great in their supporting roles...
I haven't seen it, but I'm 99.9% you can at least still say "well, it's still better than Insurrection".
I'm 3 episodes in on Strange Things on Netflix. So far, great series. I've heard nothing but rave reviews. 9.2 in IMDB.
Stranger Things was great! Star Trek Beyond was fun, but I rank it the lowest of the NuTrek movies. I liked the attempt to give more characterization and personal moments between the crew, but some jokes fell a little flat. Villain was horribly paper-thin too. There were a few moments of CGI that were glaringly bad too, which was very strange.
Also some really stupid plot points. The music bit made me laugh, but it was distinctly stupid. The CGI was worst right at the start and then when he's on the bike heading to the base. It looked like a video game from 2002.
