That's a great stat. Brown's defense is good. He'd shooting 28% from 3 so far. He also can't handle the ball. He needs to hit that 3 point shot. I am glad he's getting reps, though. I hope he improves.

I saw Simmons have wide open looks from the mid range a good amount, he didn't even think of shooting.

I have to think the pro game will expose that. If he wants to be great, he'll have to expand his game.

ESPN Summer League grades, to this point:

    Brandon Ingram, L.A. Lakers: C-

The night after an impressive debut, Ingram didn't nearly have the same impact in his second game. He didn't make his first basket until hitting a jumper with just under six minutes left in the fourth quarter and finished 3-of-12. One of those makes was a jumper with his foot on the 3-point line.

Ingram's ability to push the ball on defensive rebounds remained valuable, but the Philadelphia 76ers had Jerami Grant pick him up full court to expose Ingram's need to improve his handle under pressure.

Larry Nance Jr., L.A. Lakers: A

Nance had one of the craziest stat lines you'll ever see in any basketball game: 13 points, 8 rebounds, 7 steals, 4 assists and 4 blocks.

According to Basketball-Reference.com, Hakeem Olajuwon and Gerald Wallace are the two players to match or exceed each of those numbers (in a regular-season NBA game) since 1983-84.

While the Lakers-heavy crowd at Thomas & Mack loved all of it, a pair of powerful Nance dunks drew the loudest chants of "Larry! Larry!" (an NBA summer league tradition at this point) and even "MVP!" Nance's game was marred only by his five turnovers.

    D'Angelo Russell, L.A. Lakers: B

After making the winning shot, Russell told the ESPN2 audience, "I played like (expletive)" in the first half. That's true -- Russell was 2-of-9 from the field with five turnovers before halftime. But all was forgiven after his late heroics.

The winning 3 was off the dribble, just like Russell's other two successful long shots in the second half. That ability to pull up off the pick-and-roll may ultimately force defenses to trap Russell and put themselves in a bad spot defensively, along the lines of players like Stephen Curry and Damian Lillard.

Alas, Russell will have to put in more effort to stay in front of his man defensively. He was victimized by many of McConnell's drives.

Personally, I'd bump DAR up to the A- range. He was atrocious in the 1st half of the Philly game, but was clearly the best player on the court vs New Orleans and the best in the 2nd half vs Philly.

i think he's also older and more physically mature than russell. in other words, dunn's near his peak. he should be really good right now, but has less room to grow.

anyway, larger point is that the national press only begrudgingly respects the lakers's players. this includes all time greats like kobe, so it shouldn't be surprising that they want to crap on russell and ingram. clever to give tiny props to the least threatening of the youngsters in nance. if he's good, it doesn't mean as much to the haters as if russell or ingram really is a star. and look out, folks, they both probably are.

I think the main advantage of underhand for those that shoot terrible free throws is that you get better arc and a softer shot underhand. Even if you not dead on better chance for a shooters touch roll in.

Posting this here since we don't have an "other summer league" thread but Thon Maker has been beasting in the summer league.

Here are his stats in the following games.

    Milwaukee vs Cleveland
    15 pts/13reb/1steal/2blks

    Milwaukee vs D-League Stars(?)
    17 pts/17 reb/2 blks

He might be this Summer's Porzingis.

I can't wait for the season to start. And not the preseason either. The season. So we can get to business.

i need to watch some of his games. the rebounding is surprising me, actually. that tends to translate across levels of competition, too.

I'm not saying this because Nance is killing it against Summer league competition, but is it possible that of our two pfs Nance might end up being better? Last season he was definitely more well-rounded. He is athletic as hell, he has a better outside shot, plays much better defense. Randle rebounds better and was the higher pick, but for a moment, let's pretend we took them both in the same draft at picks number 10 and 11. Would we be anointing Randle as the 4 of the future and Nance as a great backup, or would Nance be the one we are more excited about?

I'd probably wait and see what Randle has improved on before making any judgments. Nance has 4 years of college and 1 NBA season under his belt, while Randle has 1 year of college and 1 actual NBA season under his belt.

It's easy to say Nance is better, but that's not fair to Julius. Let's see what else Randle is bringing to the table would be my outlook on that.

Julius is definitely more talented but Nance is a smarter player. Like Doc said be patient.

It's good that they're both on this team though to push each other forward.

Like Real and Doc have said, we'd be stupid to do anything before seeing how Julius does this year with Luke at the helm.

We need to see what Randle looks like with a real coaching staff. Boron basically wasted a season of development for our young talent.

I know we need to see what Randle looks like, and I realize he is younger. I'm also not saying let's trade Randle. I'm just wondering how much of our mindset regarding Randle being our 4 of the future as opposed to Nance is set in our knowledge of where they were drafted.
