I have absolutely nothing against Ryan West. He and Jesse Buss are the only two FO pieces that have consistently overperformed. They're my guys. I just don't think they're ready just yet to carry the franchise completely. I'm inclined to bring in a new GM, move Mitch to an advisory role, make Ryan my assistant GM, and move forward in a fresh new direction. Bring in Magic and Kobe to help pitch FAs.

We had some deals lined up last off season that took awhile. I bet we get a couple of moves after all the KD stuff clears up.
As far as the front office. Prob time for a change and some new blood running the show.
    Front office issues:
    1. poor job of selecting a head coach for multiple years.
    2. poor job of assuming star free agents were coming.
    3. poor job in free agent meetings with star players.
    4. poor job assembling a team that could stay respectable in the standings.

This is why we struck out in free agency this off season.

Kobe and the Lakers from a basketball standpoint are done. Kobe is going after the next business. Magic is too busy to concentrate on just Laker business. He needs to get the (bleep) Dodgers on TV in so cal.

Just because Kobe is doing other ventures doesn't mean he can't come and talk to free agents. This is an annual thing not something he'll do a lot. Same for Magic.

Free agents do not care about Celeb former players. If that really worked, the Lakers would sign every free agent that mattered. There are former Laker players that could be top 20 all time players that would come off the bench if you put a starting all time Lakers. Lakers could bring in dozens of former Lakers. It's a gimmick. It doesn't mean anything. No one cares about teams. Everyone is their own brand. I would say the only exception would be the guys in San Antonio. Everyone else, it's individual brands. That's it.

Happy 4th to you as well vasashi .... I truly miss your posts back in the day at CL. Before you became absolutely Debby Downer with regards to the Lakers. You even mention that's why you stay away out of self awareness. If you can see no positive whatsoever under the circumstances with which today, the FO is doing its best to rectify its own ineptitude and gross flaws of the past, I disagree. I really disagree with Mitch having his head lopped off too because of his subservient role to Cap Boy Jimmy following Doc Buss. Until Ryan or someone else better than Ryan is a viable replacement.

I agree that the two of them cannot be around for the Lakers all the time. That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying they need to given small ownership stock (5-10% each) so that they can go out there and help us recruit each summer. Magic is an amazing businessman and Kobe is this generation's Jordan. The two of them together can be an extremely powerful sales pitch. All they have to do is show up 2-3 times a year. They can do that.

Sorry, don't agree on Mitch being lined up for the guillotine because of his association as employee UNDER the dysfunctional remnants of the Lakers FO after Doc Buss became incapacitated ..... UNTIL... either Ryan West is "ready and capable" of manning that hottest of all hot seats as GM. Or someone better (absolutely) is picked by (Jeanie .... LOLOL....with her dogs and babies in Lakers gear focus) to boot Ryan out.

You cannot sit and preside over the worst stretch in Laker history and keep your job. It's just unacceptable. I don't blame Mitch alone, but he's not the right guy for the job going forward. I love what he's been able to do in trades over the years, but he's not a FA pitch man and even if it's guilt by association Mitch has had plenty to do with this downturn as well. This is right around the same time Jerry West stepped down as GM and became an adviser. If Mitch wants to do that, I'm game, but we need a new approach and that means Mitch, Jim, and ideally Jeanie although I know that's impossible, needs to go.

Oh I'm so tempted to do the same... I wonder if Mitch and Jim are as well.

The more I think about Gasol being back in the purple and gold, the more I would love to see it. I do think it is very unlikely though.

Paul Kasol would be a nice add. Mozgov could learn about passing and popping from Paul.

To be fair Jim and Mitch did say this free agency would be different and it has. Instead of being tied up in meetings with players we clearly knew we weren't going to get with a 17 win ball club. Jim, Mitch, and Luke went to task in calling players in trying to build a solid foundation for the future. Luke by all accounts wanted both Mozgov and Deng and talked to both of them about his plans and long term strategy. In essence, Mitch even said when asked before Free Agency started what kind of players he wanted to get after the kind of young talent we know have. Veteran players.

I think we accomplished our goals and with roughly $23 million left we can wait to see if GSW get Durant, and if so maybe take one of their players or think about giving Crabbe an offer sheet. Heck we might even sign the rest of the players to a one year deal to perserve cap space next year.

We'll be okay, future is bright, even if you have to squint a little to see it.

I'd keep Mitch in an advisor role. There needs to be a change in that FO, though. No doubt in my mind.

Uhh yeah he's not a pitch man but he's had to be with the succession of freaking boring and obnoxious Coaches Jimmy has hired last several years. (sorry, maybe I'm being naive but I don't think Mitch made the choices as I think he's smarter than that)

This is completely and solely the reason Luuuuke was hired. :Shaqwink:
