I think everyone knows the Lakers had the wrong approach the last few years. Doesn't mean they'll do it again and doesn't mean there's anything wrong with trying to get a meeting with Durant. I don't the issue.

Stealth max offers that's the key. Keep offering the max to top tier guys then pull out after we get the best one to bite:Headpoint::Madsendance:

We're reading random media reports and taking them at face value, what is the difference in "announcement"? We're reading media reports saying the Lakers are still trying to get a meeting and assuming it's true, what's the difference?

I read Ding's report with the clear understanding that it is 100% biased against Jim Buss and from the clear perspective of Jeanie Buss. Of course it makes Jim look like an idiot and makes Jeanie look like a saint. What it fails to take into account was that Mitch and Jim had a system in place: swing for the fences and when it doesn't work, tank. They did it effectively two seasons in a row. Does Jim look delusional? From one perspective, sure. From the perspective of "why not take a shot at a big name wanting to play for the Lakers?" it doesn't seem delusional at all. It seems like due diligence just like how the Lakers have worked out some 150+ players the last three weeks.

What is this, 4 strikes and you're out? At some point this repeated approach starts approaching insanity.

I think going after big-time (and assuredly unobtainable) free agents and whiffing taints the very brand we're relying on to attract free agents.

Yeah I'm not sure what that means. :D

Stable how? The Lakers are not really unstable from the basketball side of things. In fact we just stabilized. We've got the young guys, we've got the new coach, and Mitch has made it clear THAT is our direction going forward.

From the owner's side we're not even the worst team in the league. Does that include letters to the NBA telling them to boycott trades and/or letters to our previous players telling them they stink and we'll win without them? Does it include an owner with lawsuits leveled against them for the slum conditions of their properties (Washington). Does it include Russian mafia members? Does it include GS's owners saying they're the best and lightyears ahead of everyone else alienating them amongst all their contemporaries (it wasn't long ago they'd fired their coach and things were looking rocky there). Things change quickly and the ownership side of the NBA is really not something players concern themselves with overly much. If we've got something to sell on the floor to these FAs, it'll happen. We just need to be able to sell them on something. Heck we're not even the worst ownership group out there right now. Sacramento and Brooklyn are far worse. Phoenix, Oklahoma, and any number of smaller markets have proven they won't pay for winners. At least we'll do that and have proven so.

So you're suggesting we don't even talk to the clear cut best player? That makes a lot of sense. We have as much cap space as anyone. It absolutely doesn't hurt to just have one harmless meeting with KD.

I can hurt us if we look desperate and humiliate ourselves in the process.

I appreciate your balanced take, but this approach has included not trading Pau nor Howard in hopes that they would hit a home run in getting either of them to resign. They failed on both. Even when It was pretty clear Howard wouldn't come back because that experiment didn't work, the Lakers let him go without getting anything in return. Pau, gone without getting anything in return. Was that a clever cap space strategy? I guess. Add that to the tank strategy and it's stupid. The Lakers lucked out in getting these past two second round picks, some would even say that the league did them a solid. I'm not conspiratorial, so as for luck I'll give Jimmie that.

One little meeting doesn't make us look desperate.

I'm not forgiving them a lot of their mistakes. Letting Pau go in the summer of 2014 was a huge mistake for them. They should have traded him when they had a chance, same with Howard. I don't deny that. The tank strategy that I am pointing towards started in that same summer with our back-to-back worst seasons ever that netted us two 2nd picks.

Everything before the summer of 2014 to me is a separate discussion honestly and one that I can absolutely agree with hammering them on a lot of things. I think losing Jerry Buss had a LOT to do with the turmoil, but since 2014 we've been no doubt tanking and swinging for the fences was just part of that process. I think the pick they got luckiest on was Randle to be honest. With the 7th pick we got probably the 2nd or 3rd best player in that draft.

Did I ever say we shouldn't talk to KD? i would be all in if he we could. I'm going off the reports for the past several days that have defined the list of teams that KD is willing to even talk to. As for past years, I don't recall Lebron saying he was going to talk to the lakers. I don't think that Carmelo even said he would talk to the lakers. Maybe they talked and I just didn't hear about it.

The point is the strategy is not working at all. Maybe this is the year, or maybe in a couple more years it will finally work. I don't have any more patience for it.

Oh, KD has granted the Lakers a meeting? Cool. Let's see if they can deliver a pitch to seal the deal.

I agree. But continuing to beg for a meeting long after Durant has made clear he has no desire to meet with us or come here and play for us cam definitely come off as desperate. Just like our "STAY" billboards for Coward looked desperate. Just like our second meeting with Aldridge looked desperate.

Let's just pray we sign one or two of Whiteside/Horford/Conley/Noah/Batum so we can put this all behind us and look to the future. I may be down on Jim Buss but I'm really looking forward to watching what Luke does with our young core.

For what it's worth we met with Carmelo and apparently that meeting went great. He had us 2nd at one point, but then dropped us out of the running after meeting with Chicago. We never met with LeBron, but we met with his agent.

That's exactly your problem. You're basing all of this off reports from some people who may not even be plugged in. You can't overreact to every single report because we really have no idea what's happening. This happens every offseason.
