Yep. It is what it is. We need to stock the roster with vets this summer. No doubt.

DeMar DeRozan will be a free agent for the first time in his career and he was asked about whether he thinks he might find a situation better than the Toronto Raptors.

"I don't think so," said DeRozan. "My mindset has always been Toronto... I don't want to switch it up now."

DeRozan has emerged as an All-Star with the Raptors and he figures to command a max contract.

Was just about to post that. Does not sound like he'll be a Laker. Of course he would do basic lip service, but he went pretty far. Do not know how i feel about this at all. Guy has made me flipflop for weeks.

So much for my precious hours of debating Derozan's fit with @therealdeal :D

I blame Stephen a Smith for the pointless speculation. He's not even a fit for what we need Most.

What else is he gonna say? IMO we are not out of contention for DeRozan. I would say it's probably likely he stays, but LA has to be a consideration, so many rumors, where there's smoke there's fire.

$82 million is the floor we have to be at next season or something close to it. After free agency, I believe the next deadline where some players can be moved is December 15th. Then, of course, the trade deadline is in February. The point? You still have until Febuary to improve your team. It doesn't have to all be in one summer; although, that would be nice.

In any event, our plans going foward this summer don't change much if at all with or without the acquisiton of DeRozan. You still target legit vets that can help you win games; however, you don't sacrifice your flexbility going forward.

Without getting into specifics, I still think we can field a roster that can win 37-40 games next season. Then, we can head into 2017 where the FA market is much better and we will be in a great position of potentially adding a max guy while having the flexbility of creating additional options with the assets and salary cap room we have accumulated.

Absolutely. What else can he say? When he gets away from the emotion of the moment, things can change quickly. Unfortunately I think he still ends up staying. The last few years we've been turned down by every FA and I'm not 100% confident that changes this summer. I think we've got a shot at just about everybody (besides Durant and LeBron), but to do it we'll have to knock some socks off.

Any who, @abeer3 I'm not entirely sure we were ever NOT going to try to aim for bargain bin types anyway. I still expect us to take on a contract, I still expect us to sign a couple vets to huge short-term deals, and I still expect us to get one good surprise whoever that might be. For some reason I keep rolling back to Horford in my head.

DD. Top wing on my list. If not, look at Deng and Afflalo, maybe.

What happens if Durant surprises everyone and decides he wants to come to LA so we rescind our offer to DeRozan? Why would he do anything to possibly alienate his fans in Toronto before he even has a real offer from us?

The problem is Toronto's cap situation is horrible. They extended Valanciunas for 4/$64M. They signed Demarre for 4/$58M. They still have Lowry, Joseph, and Patterson on the books for another $20-25M. That's over $50M for five players.

Then you factor in their bench players and cap holds for Biyombo & DeRozan and you're looking at a team with ~$3M in cap space at best.
    Why is that relevant?

DeRozan can be "all about Toronto" all he wants but that team is a) at least one big player away from truly contending b) financially strapped from really bringing in said player c) going to have to compete with LeBron and co. for the next 3-5 years.....Toronto will never be better than Cleveland.

Meanwhile, the Warriors will continue to make noise in the west, but a Laker squad with youngins, DeRozan, and Horford would be on the up and up. We have the potential to compete with GSW, OKC, SAS and the up-and-comers of the west - MIN, UT, maybe DEN.

Whereas that Toronto squad will never make it past Cleveland and then when LeBron retires ORL, MIL, BOS, and others will be too young for Toronto to keep up with. I've come far on the DeRozan train and I believe his best choice would be to leave, sadly. LA isn't necessarily his best option, but the hometown factor helps. I liked what I saw from him in the Playoffs and I think an offense where he gets better looks and isn't the primary scorer will take his numbers to the next level. Plus he's only 26.

Biyombo will bolt when he sees the $ others throw at him. I'd give him Hibbert loot in a heartbeat. And we could still bring on DD at max.

To step away from free agency for a bit, are there any salary dumps we may be able to pursue?

Cool, we'll just grab Biyombo instead since they won't be able to afford both.
