I'm not sure Davis and Plumlee are the type of bigs you can win a title with. We know Davis' game. He's a good 3rd big in a 3 big rotation. If Davis is your starting 4 or 5, you better have stars around him at every other position. I liken Davis' situation to Clarkson. He's a nice player, but when it comes time to actually be a contender, you need more out of that starting position...unless you have 2-3 superstars. Clarkson could work as the starting sg on a team that had Westbrook and Durant, and Davis could start at the 4 or 5 if those two are on the court.

You mention Boston. That's an intriguing possibility. If they can flip that #3 for, let's say, Okafor, then you can play Noah as your other big to help cover the defensive deficiencies of Okafor. Crowder as your sf and your guard mob of Thomas, Smart, and Bradley. Elect not to extend qualifying offers on Sullinger and Zeller and they'd STILL have a max slot available after signing Noah and trading for Okafor.

Has there been any mention of Larry Sanders? Didn't he want to make a comeback after his hiatus? Maybe the Lakers can get him for cheap until he can reprove himself?

Wait, where was the "he sucks in the playoffs" talk the last two games when he had back-to-back 32 point performances? I mean I know he struggled last night, but the whole team did. It was clear from the start they weren't interested in that game and they wanted to go back to Toronto. I'll give you he's been inconsistent, but his playoff numbers really aren't all that different from his season numbers (slightly lower).

    Season: 23.5/4.5/4.0/1.0/0.3
    Playoff: 20.5/4.2/2.6/1.2/0.2

A little worse, but that makes sense for a guy who isn't built to carry the franchise playing against better competition every night. I don't think anyone here is looking at DeMar as a savior, but he's certainly more talented than what we have right now. We need players like that. And there's no such thing as a bad contract to top flight players this summer. No such thing. His max contract this summer will be roughly equivalent to a 16 million dollar deal by the summer of 2017. He'll be an enormous value player at that point.

I think they're far from winning a title. They were lucky to make it to the post season at all. I hope we're at where they're at next summer. The point is though that if I'm the Portland ownership I'm not sure I look at my big rotation and think "Noah is the answer". If I'm them I probably make a huge run at Horford. They need a reliable scoring option besides their guards.

Noah will have options this summer, but I'm just not sure I see a situation that's vastly superior to the Lakers IF they really want to go get him. Sure Boston could be interesting, but even with Noah they're far from contention as well. I just wonder what contender Noah can really find and if he can't find a contender, why not go with a 1+1 in a great city where you can build a name for yourself and cash in next summer?

We have a nice young core, but it doesn't stack up against the elite teams, not even close. The "superstars" either stay or go to a legit contender, we are not that. I would compare us to the Raiders.

For years they had money, even some young talent was being built. No one would sign there regardless of money because while they had some pieces, the respect around the league was not there because they simply weren't contending. Now that they had a pretty solid year last year with a lot of bright spots, players took notice and actually wanted to go there this year. So now to my grand point...

We haven't been close to contending the last 2 years, we have some young talent and have another high draft pick, add some good players in FA such as Derozan, Biyombo, etc (players who are pretty good but have questions) and just get this team back to relevance in the league again. The FA moves this year aren't going to get us a championship this year, but the hope should be to reshape our image and draw in some that will in the future.

^ unfortunately you're right and I'd be OK if we struck out on the big name FA's. I've been saying that most of the improvement would come from within. Luke and our hard-working kids will make us attractive to FA's in the coming years. This year may be too soon to make that big transition. I'm a realist and accept that we just finished Year 2 of the rebuilding phase. I just ignore the media with their talks of "the Lakers losing it's appeal." It's just not true. No one wants to come here because we suck.

yeah, lakers still have tons of appeal. aldridge wouldn't even have met with the lakers last year if they didn't. melo had them ahead of houston and others. the list goes on. and this was happening whilst the team was horrible. imagine what might happen if they got halfway decent...

which is why i'm not thumbing my nose at any starting quality nba player in this year's FA.

This is really well said and a great point. Being competitive this season and showing great progress is the key to next year's FA which will be deeper than this summer's. If I'm Mitch I do everything in my power to bring an All-Star in here. Any All-Star we can get, whether that's DeRozan or Horford or whomever because if we can get a talented player who already has a bit of a name in here and show some progress that'll speed up this rebuild like nobody's business.

This is very true & could be seen as as argument for trading the pick to get some proven, experienced talent on the Team immediately.. If we Draft Simmons or Ingram, there is still no guarantee that any top FA would come to LA.. Remember, pretty much every team is gonna have cap space.
I'm not saying we should trade the pick.. I'm just sayin' there's a strong argument for it.

As soon as the free agency begins, we need to hit the ground running. If we don't hear back from the top FAs in a timely fashion we need to move on to the next tier, and so on and so forth. We already have a nice young core (D'Angelo, Julius, Clarkson, Simmons/Ingram), we just need to add more tradable assets. My fear is we wait too long on one or two people, while the decent players get signed.

I'd rather give Clarkson a year to be Demar light and get a real SF
