I'd be shocked if DA isn't better than JC. In fact, I already thought he was this past season.

If there's a reason that this could happen it's that JC is 3, 4, 5 years older than the players you mentioned. I don't think JC is done improving, but I think simply by how young the other guys are he's not going to improve noticeably as much as they will. You would think those guys still have quite a bit to go before they reach their ceilings, where JC I would think is closer to his. Russ alone has the length and size at the PG position to add a post game, and become a really good defender, and with added strength get to the basket easier and shoot better from 3. He does those things and he'll be better than JC unquestionably.

I don't even want Barnes at this point. We can't afford to wrap up our money on a RFA. Times flies in free agency.

Given the Heat's cap situation, we should go after Deng. 30 million for 2 years.

I hope Clarkson becomes an All-Star. However, he shouldn't be the reason we avoid DD. We do that for transcendent talents; not for Clarkson.

I think I'd like to see JC with a decent coach for a full year before coming to any conclusions.

Having bYRON as his only coach is a bit unfair IMHO

For one month stretch, he certainly was. Over the entire season Clarkson was far more reliable.

This is absolutely true, and I like JC a lot. That said, he was a 2nd year nba player after 4 years in college, he should have been more stable. Russ was a 19 year old rookie with a coach who seemed to have a personal vendetta with him. He did a similar thing to JC his rookie season, but thankfully he finally let him play too. If the main point of all this is that we shouldn't go after DD because we have JC though, I can't agree. JC can only hope to become as good as DD and in some ways I don't think he ever can because of size, which isn't his fault, but that's how it is.

That's a fair point, but a lot of guys make huge strides around Clarkson's age. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he has a breakout season.

That's only part of the reason. The bigger part is DD's shooting deficiencies.

I'll type a long response tomorrow, but this is the crux of it. DeRozan is better than Clarkson and Jordan should not impede our ability to improve our roster. If we draft Ingram and have a chance to sign Durant we still do it. If Ingram goes first and we get Simmons despite Simmons being similar to Julius we still do it. Get talent. Worry about fit later.

I look at it this way when it comes to Derozan (I am all for signing him to get that out of the way). I don't think it's DD vs JC if we have good coaching that recognizes matchups, the shift in multi-position players and knows how to play modern day basketball. We have that in Luke so I don't see DD and JC locked in at SG where they need to compete for minutes.

Just throwing names out there (Insert your own FA/draft names if you wish) if we got DD/Whiteside/Ingram we are incredibly diverse in the lineups we can run.

    DAR / JC / DD / Randle / Whiteside
    DAR / DD / Ingram / Randle / Whiteside
    DAR / JC / Ingram / Nance / Randle
    DAR / JC / DD / Ingram / Whiteside
    JC / DD / Ingram / Nance / Randle

Point being, look at it from the perspective of how diverse we can be with lineups. Clarkson can play the 1/2, Derozan the 2/3, Ingram 2/3/4, Randle 4/5. With Byron it was you play here and that's how you get minutes. With Luke, I'm hoping with how GS plays, we can mix and match and creates mismatches that are in our favor. Something we never did in the Byron era.

To sum up DD brings a skill set that really no one does on our team consistently, mid-range and take it to the hoop without the need for screens. Now that isn't really valuable done all the time, but mixed and matched with DAR (screens and 3s) and JC (3s and attacking the hoop) it's a pretty solid mixture. DD makes our team better at the end of the day and that's really all that matters to me.

In regards to the spacing issue that might come up, I'd say if you have 2-3 shooters on the court at all times (DAR, JC, Lou, Ingram, FA shooter) you can run a respectable offense given that DD, Randle can and will attack the basket at will if 1 on 1 and the big Whiteside/Biyombo sets good screens and rolls with a purpose/crashes the glass hard.

I'm looking forward to it, but please do not make your post about Clarkson vs Derozan. If you look back to page 108 I've already acknowledged that DD is the overall better player (although I don't think there's much of a difference)

I'd like to discuss who slots in better into a potential lineup of D'Angelo, _______ , Ingram, Julius, Whiteside/Biyombo in the GSW system. The better player doesn't necessarily make the team better. I hope your post will reflect that.

That was a really good post. I have DAR and Julius locked in as starters, and I agree DD could work if we ran a small ball lineup with Randle at the 5. But I'd be a bit leery about running Ingram at the 4 so we'd need a FA shooter at that spot. Your post gives me a bit more confidence but I still do not think he's an good fit due to spacing.

    DAR/JC/Ingram/Deng/Randle

Four shooters. I like that small ball lineup alot better. Again, I'd take Derozan if he were our only choice, but he still does not eclipse a player like Deng. I also agree that DD would undoubtedly make us better, both due to his talent and our depth, but that can be said about pretty much all the FA wings out there.

So once the Thunder beat the Cavs in the Finals, we're signing LeBron... right guys?

Why would he want to play in the West, and be in Kobe's shadow when most fans think he's a wuss, not a warrior?

I'm on the Derozan bandwagon now if we don't trade our pick.

Im not completely sold on Derozan. He seems too much like those guys that will have 3 bad games, then 1 good game.

Here's a quick look at DD's Game Score over the past three seasons:

    Cumulative
    Negative: 7 (3.2%)
    0-5: 8 (3.7%)
    5-10: 33 (15.2%)
    10-15: 60 (27.6%)
    15-20: 50 (23.0%)
    20-25: 44 (20.3%)
    25-30: 13 (6.0%)
    30+ 2 (0.6%)

"10" is an average performance, according to BKREF. He was above average, then, in 78% of his games, and he was twice as good as an average game in 27% of his games.

Here is JC last season, for comparison:
    79 games played
    Negative: 3 (3.8%)
    0-5: 15 (19.0%)
    5-10: 22 (27.8%)
    10-15: 22 (27.8%)
    15-20: 13 (16.5%)
    20-25: 4 (5.0%)
    26-30: 0 (0%)
    30+: 0 (0%)

He was below average in 40 of his 79 games, or just over 50%. He was at twice as good as an average performance in 4 (5.1%) of his games.

    Russell is pretty fascinating:
    Negative: 6
    0-5: 22
    5-10: 28
    10-15: 10
    15-20: 10
    20-25: 3
    26-30: 0
    30+: 1
Below average: 56 of 80 (70%), twice as good as average 5%, and triple average once.

I'm not saying this is the best measure of player performance, but it's instructive. Russell didn't always play a lot, struggled sometimes, and was below average most of the time. JC was below average about half of the time. DD was below average in <1/4 of his games. He's far more consistent - and consistently good - than JC, for instance.
