    Ben Simmons workout

    What is Ben Simmons ceiling?
    http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/page/Coach15602825/ben-simmons-nba-ceiling

    If you don't want to read the whole thing, here's the end of it;

    Can he be great?
Simmons reminds me of several players. He has Jason Kidd-like hands on defense, which will be phenomenal for him going against NBA forwards. He's also very versatile like Scottie Pippen, Toni Kukoc and Lamar Odom, who were all very skilled players and excellent ball handlers. I see some Paul Millsap, too -- a chaos creator on defense who is also a highly skilled passer.

Simmons can be a primary ball handler both in the transition game and in half-court sets, where his size-enhanced ability to thread passes both through and around defenders is reminiscent of LeBron (maybe the only real way to compare the two is via their passing/size similarities).

The NBA has plenty of players Simmons' size who can start (and often finish) a fast break from a defensive rebound to a made basket. But Simmons can join the very select few players who can do it on a consistent basis as an ordinary part of his game.

Think about it this way: In 2015-16, only five players at least 6-7 (in shoes) finished in the top 35 in assists per game -- Draymond Green, LeBron James, Nicolas Batum, Kevin Durant and Giannis Antetokounmpo. Four of those guys are max-type players, and Batum could get close to max money this summer. Green, James, Durant and Antetokounmpo also averaged over seven boards per game -- a reasonable expectation for Simmons within a season or two.

Simmons can be one of the top two players on his team in all three phases of the game (scoring, passing, rebounding) while being an elite defender. That puts his ceiling as a perennial All-Star, a max-salary player and, if he learns to be a better primary scorer, a recurrent MVP candidate.

Simmons has to work on his shooting consistency but there's good bones there. I think his jumper looks a little more natural than LeBron's does. He just needs to work on it and gain confidence in it. As long as he checks out mentally I think he's the best player in the draft. If the Sixers blink we win the draft. If they take him we still get a stud. Damn we're in a positive spot.

That's why I've always said #2 in this draft you can't lose, alleviates a lot of pressure on us.

Whomever drafts Ben should really work to move his jumper to a 1 motion shot.

He currently has a 2 motion shot (like LeBron/Kobe/Draymond) where he jumps, hangs for a split second at the apex of his jump, then uses his wrist to power the shot forward. This usually leads to a flattened shot as well as "losing your legs" as the game progresses (since the initial jump is where you get all the height on the shot) and leaving jumpers short.

If you watch most of the better shooters in today's game (Steph/Harden/Klay/even D'Angelo) their shot is a smooth 1 motion release. They jump, "push" the ball (using their shoulders and arms and only use their wrists to guide the ball and add minimal rotation) so that the release coincides with the apex of their jump (which is generally a short hop rather than a big, "shooting over a guy" type leap).

I actually don't think we keep the pick. But why draft a SF when we're going to sign one for the max?

I don't think we're trading it unless it's Paul George, which I don't think is happening. I also down think we're signing a sfs now to the max. DeRozan is a sg. Ingram will come off the bench to start and DD will then slide to sg and Clarkson to the bench.

I'd draft and sign a SF because then we go from having none to having 2. Young isn't going to be here next season, and hopefully Anthony Brown isn't either. As for Ingram and Simmons, I honestly don't care who we get at this moment. I'm still so thrilled that we get one of them at all, that I don't care which it is. I think Ingram fits right in better, but I think Simmons is an amazing prospect.

Not enough minutes for DD, DAR, JC, and Lou, and we still don't have a pass first true PG besides potentially Huertas

I think we could get by without a past first pg when all our guards can play both spots.

    Acquiring DD makes Lou expendable.

On another note, does anybody have Ingram's latest measurements? And Simmons?

"...Not as a superstar scorer, but as someone who can learn to make the most of his length, shooting, ballhandling, playmaking, and rebounding to impact the game in a wide variety of ways..."

Is it just me or does that sound like Jamal Wilkes?

I think they're in the process of verifying measurements that were taken recently in Chicago. A lot of them were apparently way off.

Getting "enough minutes for Lou Williams" shouldn't stop us from acquiring awesome talent or a top flight FA. Pass first PGs are available, but GS doesn't have one. They do fine.
