^Assistant coach? Send him to the D-League as a refresher course? MWP would be a stable presence for a group that will need it. Ten years ago that would have been a nutty statement.

Back as a player? No thanks.
Back as a player development coach or something along those lines? Sure.

I think everyone would love if he was back as a coach (including the Lakers), but I think he still thinks he can play... Can't do anything if he's still under the impression he's an NBA player.

I don't think he's a player anymore, but I would be willing to burn a 15th spot on him if we clear dead weight. It's essentially an assistant coaching gig and everyone knows it but MWP. He and Luke have a very good rapport and have a shorthand, we need all the vets in the locker room we can get for cheap. We can let him run practice (Luke's going to need a defensive coordinator anyway) and officially be an assistant the following year.

    On Sports Nation:

-Luke: It's a great job for him and can be here for 10 years if he does well. It was the right time for him. He's smart. Brings a different style which will fit with the young guys. Going 39-4 with the Warriors will get these guys excited. His motion offense will work well, has a lot reads and options (like the tri in that regard). Luke take advantage of the personnel he has.
-Kobe: 60 was amazing, can't write a script like that. They were talking before the game about how many shots they can get him. Julius was like get him 30-40 shots, they were like that's ridiculous. Worst part about the farewell tour ... hardest part was not having Kobe there every day. Not in shoot around or practice every day -- tough for coaches and players to ready themselves for the game because of that. But Kobe deserved it and his fans deserved it.
-On his free agency: Wants to be a Laker, wants to come back. "Absolutely!" Says he can still play a little and can still lockdown on D.
-Scott: gave him opportunity. Thought he might get another year. But it's tough with back to back years like they had. Jim put himself on the line (with playoff/contention guarantee) and Jim thinks Luke gives him the best shot to achieve that.
-On LA's FA targets: "bring them all. Bring the best." LA has a good core. Getting better and better. Randle has improved. Russ takes big shots.

Bring him back as an assistant coach, a defensive specialist. Who is better than him to mentor these young guys and teach them how to play defense?

Still waiting for theory here why after an off season and one full NBA season on the team with Julius, that Julius is not further along technique wise and mentally anticipating. Either Metta not doing good enough job yet teaching and communicating to get main information across, or.... what? Julius is a super slow learner, or ...... maybe not a great multi-tasker ..... too much on his plate trying to fix his shot and right hand and slow down and learn to pass better and be a rebounding stud?

Certainly NO freaking help from his head coach Boron the a-hole who was more interested in exerting his authority and playing mind games with everyone. This is going to change immediately with Luke though.

Recorded the first part of MWP on The Jump today, I didn't care about the bit on the Cavs/Hawks, just the Lakers stuff. As with SportsNation, he's very high on Luke.

I love MWP. I want him to be a part of the Lakers going forward, even if it meant he sits at the end of the bench (as long as we get some big upgrades this summer).

But I'm not convinced how good of a defensive coach he would be. MWP's top defensive strength was due to having an incredible innate feel for how to slap at the ball, and that's not something I feel you can teach.

I haven't seen much that tells me he'd be a great defensive team strategist. I'd want to hear a few stories of teammates talking about how he taught them something about positional defense, or drawing up some defensive plans that worked, before I would burn an assistant coach spot on him. This past season didn't give me the impression he had any defensive impact on the team.

Perhaps. I've always seen him as a good leader, a motivator for the young guys. Maybe I'm wrong, of course. We don't see what they talk about in practice and how he interacts with young players - but if he is making a positive impact, maybe they can find a way for him to stay with the Lakers. He's not a rotational player anymore IMO.

Might be a good idea to keep him if we go after Cousins for Luke backup...

I'd rather use a roster spot on Metta for his locker room leadership then waste another year hoping Ryan Kelly actually improves.

I still don't know what Harden was trying to do here. The play was over, you're on offense then you taunt Artest of all people. Douchebag, you mess with the bull, you'll get the horns.

I wouldnt use a roster spot. He's beyond done. That 15th spot could be useful if we want to pick someone up mid season. Coach of some kind is what he needs to accept.

Yep. I love Metta. I love what he brings to us, but he's not an NBA player anymore. If he wants to come here as a player coach, then I'm completely okay with that. Otherwise, that 15th spot can go to someone more valuable. It can be an open spot for a trade, one last spot for a player out of our D-League that we like (Anthony Brown), or one last spot for a veteran who can help shape our team's culture in a more positive way.

^He was basically a player-coach last season. Whether he knew it or not.

I know the problem is he doesn't know at all. He still thinks he's a player. If he's willing to be a full time coach instead of a player coach, then I'm all for welcoming him back.
