Byron Scott says analytics will have a bigger role in upcoming Lakers season

Los Angeles Lakers Head Coach Byron Scott called in to The Home Team this morning to share his views on the teams upcoming season. From Kobe Bryant’s health to D’Angelo Russell’s (the team’s No. 2 draft pick) performance in the Summer League to Julius Randle to the role of analytics to rebuilding the franchise. Clay Moser is the team’s new “analytics guy” and Byron Scott says:

We'll be using a lot more. Clay can bridge the gap between the analytical guys and the coaching guys. There are analytical guys who don’t have a clue about the game of basketball so one of the reasons we hired Clay was to bridge the gap. We are going to use analytics a lot more because the language is a lot better as far as him being able to relate it to us and to them as far as what we want to see.

Not without a backhanded compliment:

Perhaps as one of the top five shooting guards of all-time, its hard to keep Kobe Bryant off any team. Although Bryant has shown to be a difficult teammate to play with, there is no doubt that he brings a championship pedigree and winning culture to this team. Not only do Kobe’s accolades speak for itself, five-time NBA champion and 2008 MVP just to name a few, but the Lakers’ veteran has been a scoring machine throughout his career. During his 19-year career, Bryant has averaged 25.4 points and 5.3 rebounds-per-game while shooting 45% from the field. While Kobe has been known to take his fair share of shots, this team has players that can score, which should take the pressure off the Lakers’ star. Having Bryant on this team give this squad a great scorer and leader.

Here is a bit of it:

The Los Angeles Lakers went into the NBA off-season still licking their wounds from the worst campaign in team history. Injuries, a lack of talent, questionable on-court schemes, and more injuries had made the 2014-15 season a gauntlet of misery. Still, the off-season brought with it a modicum of hope, as it tends to do. After all, anything can happen when every team in the league has their record reset to 0-0. It wouldn’t be easy, but the next step in the rebuilding process was about to unfold.

Their massive, nervous fan base understood what they were up against in the brutal Western Conference, but still, this is the Lakers. The purple and gold have always found a way to get it done, and the off-season was to be the beginning of their rebirth.
