It's very on brand. I'd be in favor of it only if we can't move Russ or THT. I don't see any path to Russ on this roster, so for those reasons I'm out. In a smarter universe, we kept GP Jr and brought on pops as an assistant.
I like Malik I hope we work something out. He sounds at the moment, like he wants to stay in LA. Money getting thrown at you can change your perspective on things though. It will be interesting to see what type of offers he gets. I wouldn't be surprised if the Clippers jumped into the picture.
i'm sure most teams will offer monk the mini mle on day one, but i'd be shocked if he left us for that (provided we didn't use it on someone else).
Is GP2 really a mid level player? I think if we really like him, we might have a shot at a vet minimum contract where he gets a player option for year two. I haven’t really seen GP2 play in several years now but if we can replicate some of what we lost in Caruso, and we can get that at a reasonable price… it’s worthwhile to look into
if someone offers him the full 4/40, i'm sure he'll take it. but i have doubts that someone does that. maybe someone does a caruso-level deal for him, and we can only match that if we do some shuffling. hopefully, we've told him what our general plans are so that both he and we can move quickly as things happen in FA.
GP Senior recently was talking about how he doesn’t think the Warriors will be able to afford to retain him. I also haven’t really seen him play much lately, but have vaguely heard some high praise from Warriors fans. I do get the sense that he’s no longer a veteran’s minimum kind of player. In a vacuum, I prefer Monk over someone like Payton for the MLE, by far. But if for example you can swing the Westbrook trade with Indiana that has Buddy Hield coming our way, then Monk becomes a bit redundant and it probably makes more sense to use the MLE on a defensive specialist.
if you just look at this last year, gpII looks like a caruso level player, maybe even better. but caruso was a) younger and b) had put together two consecutive solid years before he got his big offer. gpII will get some 2-year mini-mle offers, imo. maybe a two-year in the 7 per range if things break right. btw: gs is starting to look like SA used to, too. by that i mean i have serious questions about how well guys will perform outside their system/organization. for example, if jordan poole got a big offer elsewhere, does he look like this in the new place? i have my doubts, tbh. what does kevon looney look like if he plays for the pistons?
as i said above, it's the years. i don't think he takes a 1/10 elsewhere, maybe not even 2/20 over our 6 per with a player option. someone will have to offer him caruso money. and then yes, we could lose him. but as much as i do like monk, i don't think he's irreplaceable. caruso (speak of the devil) was a much bigger one, imo.
I don't think he takes a long deal anywhere. If the max he's getting is $10m a year, he's only 24, he's going to get better and get into that $16m-$18m range by the time he hits his prime. He'd be foolish to cap himself at his current range. Most I could see him taking is two years guaranteed with a 3rd year as a PO.
yeah, so why not just take the mini mle with a PO on year 2 and early bird rights gained in a situation that you like? though i'm not sure he'll get to that 18 million per range. he'd have to make another jump, and that would put him in the tim hardaway jr class (15-18 per).
