Woah; he was waived? So is there a waiver bidding for him? We need to make an offer. I'd even try to move Nash to open up room to make a bid if that's possible.
Shams Charania @ShamsCharania In free agent Josh Smith's discussions so far, clear sense: Any NBA team that isn't playoff-bound or contending shouldn't call. Houston will acquire him, IMO
Adrian Wojnarowski ✔ @WojYahooNBA Houston's aggressively pursuing Smith, sources say. Rockets-Smith had strong mutual interest 'in 13, but couldn't get sign-and-trade done.

Since when has Smith cared about winning? I do think he ends up going to Houston, but I'm sure he'd consider an offer from us. By saying that non-contending teams shouldn't call, I think that's a message that a team like Utah shouldn't bother offering the minimum or $2 million BAE if Smith can get the same amount from a better team. But if we come offering more than twice the amount that Houston can, that's something worth listening to. But I'm a little confused about how this process works. I thought when a player is waived, there is a wire where the team who puts in the highest bid gets to claim them. Is that the case here? And can we even use Nash's $4.5 million injury exception? I feel like if we could, someone out there in the media would have at least mentioned us as a possible suitor.
We're a terrible team. Beggars can't be choosers. When a player of Smith's caliber is available for relatively cheap, you go after him. You hope that we can reign him in offensively while getting him to help out defensively ... and if it doesn't work and he remains an offensive black hole, well how much worse can we really get?
Absolutely do NOT want! I do however want him to go to Houston. Recipe for their well deserved meltdown.
Dwight's pushing this I bet. He wants his best friend on the Rockets. Rockets could be better team defensively than the Dubs and Grizz if they add Josh Smith. Dwight, Smith, Trevor and Brewer on the same team could be a living hell for the opposition.
What good does Smith do at this point? We aren't making the playoffs, so why would we need him? To add 5 wins on the season and drop from potentially a top 5 pick to waiting to see who Phoenix drafts with our pick. This season is a bust. Play the young guys on our team, bring someone up from the D-League, establish an offensive system besides Kobe iso, build some chemistry, work towards next season. Kobe and Josh Smith iso'ing back n forth would be terrible to watch. Smith isn't the defensive player he was in Atlanta. We'd get more out of player like Manny Harris or Roscoe Smith than having Smith for 1 year.
No thanks. When I was hoping to keep Howard around it was one thing, but without Howard and a banged up Kobe... He's not a piece we'd build around. Why bother? We're not going to win more games with him on the team.
Nope, terrible shooter with a very undisciplined game. He's shooting 39% this season overall, 24% from 3, and 47% from the ft line. And that's not some awful one season anomaly, he hasn't shot better than 70% from the the previous 3 seasons before this one (53%, 51%, 63%). He'll get you 7-8 boards and 1-2 blocks per game, but he fills no needs for us. I'm good with Ed Davis at PF, and I'd rather have Boozer than him at his price as well. Houston can have him.
We wont be able to get him if Houston ( or any other contender want him). If we could get him, my greatest fear is we try and keep him. An inefficient player who if we resigned does as much damage to us as he did to Detroit. Better to stay where we are. He is not the answer.
Yeah, but we're not doing any of those things. I hear you, but we're not going to get a top 5 pick anyway, in all likelihood, and we are decidedly not doing any of the things to either establish an offense or develop our young players. Lakers fans have to start realizing that we're not doing sensible things. We're always swinging for the fences. Bring in Smith, have the ability to re-sign him next year, and have the possibility of a competitive teams like so: Lin/Clarkson Kobe/Young Smith/Johnson Randle/Boozer/Kelly Hill/Davis/Sacre
That team isn't any better than we have right now. We will just have the same problems Detroit had playing a squad with 3 PF's and no spacing. The best 3 point shooter on that team is Lin at 34%, Another season of long inconsistent 2's. Smith is starting to slip, we wouldn't be getting the Smith from Atlanta, he's definitely on the downside of his career.
