Only Baze had a worse +/- for us, but I liked the effort and activity I saw from DJ. Active hands and feet.

    8/8/3 in 14.

Contested, rotated, volley ball spiked some offensive boards, got a couple nice finishes from Russ.

Yeah but can’t shoot or organize offense like Marc who would have been a better fit IMO. DJ so far looks like shouldn’t be playing much. At least not with the starters.

My only question mark with Marc on this team would be his ability to get up and down the court with the pace we're trying to achieve.

Fair point for sure. The half court game would be improved but not transition. In the end he retired anyway so it’s moot.

He’s just resting and getting in better shape probably so he can join the Warriors by the deadline and once Klay is back. It’s been reported on the internets …. must be true. I say, “book it”.

he looks basically how he did the last couple years, imo. i doubt management was expecting much more. wish gasol didn't retire or that we signed dieng, though.

Credit where it’s due, I thought DJ had his best game last night with Dwight out. He really stepped up and played solid D and was a great lob target with those backwards dunks.

I thought we were bad playing against the P&R, Rockets had no understanding of how to guard it at the NBA level. DJ feasted off it.

He does exactly what he's supposed to do. Dunks every damn lob and blocks some shots. I have no issues with that.

it's almost like...a vet min starter at center is a placeholder who's just supposed to not screw up...and...not...the reason for all of our losses?

Yeah getting DAJ when you had Dwight made no sense to me. I would preferred a hybrid PF/C with some range on his jumpshot like Dieng to increase your lineup versatility.
Oh well, I think they just got really enamored with the bubble duo and just wanted to recreate it.

DAJ rotations are just not good at this stage of his career

i sometimes think fans want lineup versatility more than coaches/gms. seems like our philosophy was to double up on largely similar players outside of the big three, i guess so that injuries to role players can't tank you? or so that you can play the same schemes for most of the game?

could explain why we rarely pick and rolled with harrell last year, too--it's not the general way we wanted to play, and nobody felt like playing two different styles for chunks of the game.

It's pretty much this. You find a formula that works for everyone, players and coaches, and you try to stay true to it as much as possible. In that sense, DJ works quite well for this team. Yes, he's lost some speed, so he can't defend the way he used to when he was younger. Still, he has great hops and he knows exactly what his role is. Almost every time he gets to shoot the ball, it will go in. He leads the team (and it's not even close) by converting over 80% of his shots (+ most of those 20% result in free throws). When he knows he's not in a position to score, he's not going to do anything stupid with the ball. It would be very unfair to blame the role player who gets the minimum when things go wrong. He is doing his job. Now he can do it off the bench and we should be g2g. Split minutes with Dwight and go with whoever is capable of bringing more energy on any given day.

yeah, i loved the theory of running the team one way with marc starting and another way with trez and the bench, but very few nba teams do this, and maybe there's a reason for it.

it's sort of like how if you could switch defensive coverages each time down the floor, you could really fluster ball-dominant guards, but teams just can't get that kind of coordination down.

hence: we "ice" the pick and roll, etc., as a general, consistent strategy. as opposed to: we'll ice when i hold up my left fist and we'll hard trap otherwise.

it's interesting as a fan and as someone who played. i got some playcalling duties handed to me (akin to qb audibling), but we never messed with general schemes. that was team/core philosophy.

Of course. And the best coaches in the NBA had this kind of philosophy too. Look at Phil: he knew how he wanted to play, and he would ask for a certain type of player in order to run those schemes consistently. In many cases, he didn't even ask for a "type" - he'd ask for a specific player to just plug in. "Give me Horace Grant". "See if you can get Harper here".
