I am really sick of this meme going around, "Crying Jordan". Ever since Jordan cried when UNC lost in the NCAA championship game, people have been photoshopping his face onto anything when someone loses or is sad. Can't a man cry when he's sad or hurt without society having to make fun of him? Is it that abnormal for a man to cry that we have to make fun of him? Is Jordan crying really that big of a deal that people are still posting this meme? It feels like by this meme getting reposted on and on, we're refusing to be content with the fact that he cried. Yeah, he cried, SO WHAT? Leave it at that. Maybe feel some empathy for him. Maybe show some respect for him that he allowed himself to show raw emotion, in public nonetheless. Personally, as a man, I have a lot of trouble crying. Whenever I feel tears coming, my "killer instinct" is to immediately try to hold them back. It sucks. Crying feels good sometimes. I have a feeling that it's because our society says "boys can't cry". When a man cries, like Jordan, we just can't stop making fun of him. Is our society that immature? It sure is eye-opening to me that we tease a man over and over again for crying and can't simply validate his feelings and move on.
Honestly, I think you're overthinking this a bit. Yes, in a lot of society, men aren't supposed to cry, but so what, I think we all do sometimes. I find the crying Jordan meme funny still because people continue to come up with more and more creative ways to use it. I don't think it has to do so much with making fun of a man crying as it has to do with the ultimate winner and competitor being used as a symbol for utter fail/defeat.
I think it has nothing to do with shaming a man for crying and everything to do with a funny picture. Guys cry all the time, but if they're caught in a way that's funny or a situation that's funny then I don't see any reason why they can't be teased. I think the meme is a little overplayed at this point, but I see no issue with it. Heck it hasn't even tarnished Jordan's legacy either which can happen sometimes.
I find them absolutely hilarious. I look forward to the losing players getting the Crying Jordan treatment. People on the Internet are so talented and funny. Enjoy it. As for Jordan, he said he doesn't mind them.
not only do I think the crying Jordan meme is great, but I find the timing of this post odd. this meme has been around a while now, and it was in fact created when Jordan cried at his hall of fame induction speech, not when UNC lost.
i think the meme is supposed to be funny precisely because mj's a symbol of traditional hyper masculinity, so seeing him show emotion must mean something huge happened (in this case, it didn't). the humor then is applying it to all manner of less-than-huge things. i understand op's general concern, but i think the source of the crying does matter here. had they taken a shot of him crying at his father's funeral and went viral with it, it takes on a wholly different meaning to me.
I've never "read" the meme as mocking Jordan for crying. It's like using a "Can't even deal" gif when someone would be in such a situation but isn't showing the same emotion. Am I missing something? Btw, I totally agree about the general sentiment: guys should cry more. And we should stop mocking people for showing emotion. Repression ain't good, y'all.
