ingram's a solid player and seems like a good guy. but his ceiling never impressed me, and i'm glad we don't have to deal with his upcoming contract situation.

i'm glad that after we traded him everyone decided he was good, though. good for him. if he had the twitter, i'm sure he'd be glowing.

how do you know what his ceiling is? dude is barely 22 and we've seen most of our former picks have all gone to do more and better things when playing for another team

i don't. but i'm willing to bet it's not high enough that we regret moving him. so far, he looks like exactly the same player he's been.

The approach to build from within is a great idea, but it doesn't work in LA.

They weren't patient enough and too much pressure from the fans and media to deliver immidiate results.

With that said, nobody really knows the ceiling of these guys. One thing we DO know though is none of them is a cornerstone player. None of them is a sure fire superstar and none of them will be the #1 guy on a championship. We don't even know if they can be the #2 guy. That makes extending these guys very difficult as you end up paying for future (uncertain) production. If they fail you are stuck with a head case.

It is easy when you draft a KD, LeBron, Towns, Simmons etc...those guys were clearly #1 picks and you know for sure, they are at least on track to be a #2 on a championship team. The fan base is more "secure" and the FO sticks to their guy.

But with a bunch of maybe's...its hard because people celebrate them after one win and doubt them after the next loss...its a roller coaster.

I dont see much of an issue with Ingram possibly being a #2, yes at this pt it certainly looks like he wont ever be a #1 on a championship team. Randle for all his warts could've been a solid #2/#3 as well. Our team did NOT put ANY of our youth in a good situation to flourish and mgmt switched course rather quickly. Den/Por while NOT clear contenders have shown enough with their internal rebuilding to grow into contenders, Cj McCollum while truly gifted scorer isn't a #1 guy either and while he shows to be great #2 at time also has had difficulties in the playoffs a times but Por kept and paid him, same thing with Murry of Den, I dont see him as a legit #1 but he does enough to make that team good to be a an elite team and Den gave him the max.

i think the argument would be that if portland and denver wanted titles, they'd probably have tried to move those guys for actual stars before they had to extend them. easier said than done, and them being in non-glamor markets may make it impossible. as KB indicates: that strategy probably wouldn't sit well in la. had we not moved for davis, lebron would peter out and we'd have been paying randle, ingram, and ball 20+ per to help guide us to bottom half of the playoffs finishes at best, imo. that's fine for portland, in part because they don't have some of the lakers' natural advantages. i don't think lakers fans or ownership are fine with that.

I see where you are coming from.

I certainly agree that we didn't put our youth in a good enough position to max their potential.

But saying Ingram and Randle can be a solid #2 is a reach.

Lets see current #2 guys on championship rosters

    Kawhi and George
    Durant and Kyrie
    LeBron and Davis
    Steph Curry and Klay Thompson
    Simmons and Embiid
    Giannis and Khris Middleton

The only guy they could possibly outplay is Khris Middleton...the other #2s are clearly better than Randle and Ingram will ever be.

    ^you are right.

But they turned into MVP candidates or top 10-15 NBA players (except Middleton), which is an exceptional achievement which isn't replicated so easily.

It takes a lot of things going your way to get there. Obviously I can't argue with you about the future as we don't know how this will unfold. You might end up being absolutely right.

But given today, it seems like a reach in my opinion.
