If you're not a fan of Kanye, you probably won't like this. It's not a rap song, and most people would probably look to other artists if they wanted to hear an emotional ballad.

But I've been listening to this all week. As a huge Kanye fan, I usually find myself drawn back to 808's and Heartbreak during the winter time. So this release was great for me. It's musically similar to some of the stuff on 808's, but it's much more uplifting and helping me through some tough times.

I like this song a lot actually. I don't like Kanye's "experimental" music, but this song is pretty good.

Speaking of rap music, just curious, but by small chance, can anyone identify anyone in this picture?

Supposedly they are big in the rap scene in L.A., but I'm not sure:

I gave it one listen and wasn't impressed. I like a lot of Lupe's music, so I was a bit disappointed. I'll give it a few more spins and hopefully it'll grow on me.

Right now, I'm listening to Em's latest, J Cole, and Big KRIT.

Why is Big Sean so popular?

I assume he's a really hard worker and dependable or something, because he's on everyone's songs, but he's the definition of a mediocre rapper.

Sufjan Stevens, one of my favorite artists ever, had his new album leak. I've listened to it once, and I can already tell its going to be one of my favorite albums from him.

I haven't listened to it yet, but the 4 released songs over the past few months didn't impress me.

Only 3 of those songs made it to the album. I can't think of the fourth one, unless you're talking about the one he performed on the Colbert report. But that song was great! Especially considering he wrote it the day before the performance. I can understand not liking "i" (although it's much different on the album version) or even "King Kunta", but "Blacker the Berry" is really good.

Anyways IIRC, I was the one who made the thread for Good Kid, mAAd City on CL and it took a long time for that one to grow on a lot of people. You'll come around to this one too :smirk:

Like GKMC, this is an album you need to listen to from beginning to end. It's a lot different than everyone was expecting though. There are no real "bangers". It's more of a funk/jazz album. But the message is powerful. It's not some revolutionary social commentary, but its heartfelt and told in an interesting way. Regardless of what you think about Kendrick, he's undoubtedly the biggest rapper in the game right now. Coming from that position, I definitely respect him telling the story he wanted to tell instead of playing it safe.

Ok, just finished listening to Pimp a Butterfly for the first time. My first impression was that I liked it much more than I liked GKMC the first time I listened to it for a few reasons. First, to this day I still don't like the first 4 or so songs on GKMC, but there wasn't one song on this album that I felt I couldn't listen to. Second, the first half of this album sounds like Kendric been listening to a whole lot of Outkast and Madlib. That's 100% a good thing. The beats are really jazzy and all over the place. That might get on my nerves after a few listens, but for right now, I liked it enough. I thought the second half of the album was really strong though. Especially the last song with the interview at the end (no spoilers).

Overall on my first listen I give To Pimp A Butterfly a B, and I can see it going higher after a few listens.
