I didn't see a thread where we can follow all the different deadline deals and rumors involving the Lakers. I figured we could dump everything into this thread to keep track of everything so we aren't bouncing to different threads....

1st rounder + Lavoy Allen (TO next year) for Nick Young or Lou Williams

Do it Mitch. And then come back in a year and a half and bring PG here. The ultimate savage move.

    This works too.

Lou Williams boosted his value. He's definitely worth a 1st at this point.

We know Lou has value. Young is certainly tradeable but lesser in value than Lou for obvious reasons. I've been an advocate for trading one or even both in the right deals. A team like Indiana, willing to trade a 1st round pick for immediate help, is the obvious target to engage in trade talks. If I'm the Lakers FO, be it Kupchak or Magic or whomever at this point, I'd call up every team currently in the playoff picture - ranging all the way from on the outside looking in to elite, no doubt title contender - and just seeing what is out there. If the return is a 1st round pick then obviously the former is preferable but shouldn't rule out anything. There are always potential 3 team trades.

Great. Trade one of em just to make a point. No problem. High picks in the draft are easy to come by.

Problem with that is all the things we are criticizing them for, you have to imagine opposing GMs are noticing as well. So I think their value to the Lakers is more than their actual trade value. A trade offer built around Russell or Randle would have been a lot more attractive this past summer than it is now. Best to hang on to them and hope they get their act together, individually and as a team, rather than trading at less than peak value.

If they are high 2nds I can live with that. We have a solid recent track record of finding solid 2nd round gems. No guaranteed contract. Cheap on the cap.

Looking at the Wizards' salaries, I don't really see one that lines up perfectly where his contract is tradeable with Lou, equal or shorter in length and where the Wizards would part with that player (i.e. not Porter or Morris). One that works is Burke + Oubre but I'd be surprised if the Wizards parted with their 2015 1st rounder. He's looked pretty good and is still just 21. Certainly not with a 1st round pick included as well but I can see them passing on just Oubre being included in general.

So just looking at it, the Lakers will either have to take on Nicholson or Jason Smith - both of whom have contracts longer than Lou (Nicholson by 2 and Smith by 1, noting both have player options on the final years of their respective deals). It's not ideal to take back a longer contract, esp. to a mediocre frontcourt player where the Lakers are obviously not lacking in depth, but that's what seems to be the closest match. With Ian Mahinmi back, Jason Smith is fairly expendable. If I'm the Lakers I'd prefer him to Nicholson. Shorter contract and the guy actually has 3pt range, so he at least provides that new element to the Lakers frontcourt. This summer Smith and Black should have decent trade value as capable bigs with moderate contracts. Certainly useful throw-ins if the Lakers make a run at a star.

So yeah, Jason Smith + 1st round pick for Lou Williams is what I think is most feasible.

(Or could be slightly expanded where the Lakers toss in Thomas Robinson and the Wizards toss in SG Sheldon McClellan. Kind of equalize depth since now it's a small + big for small + big deal - Wizards may want Robinson as insurance if Mahinmi gets hurt again and McClellan is a 24 year old SG who the Lakers can take a look at and has a cheap team option next season. Lakers seem to do OK with throw-in SGs in deals)

If we're trading Lou, who is frankly our best player, for a draft pick, that means we've given up on competitive basketball for at least 2 years.

I think it means we give up competitive basketball for 3 months. And besides we've given up competitive basketball for 3 years now.
