By signing two 1yr deals with us in succession, Kcp is considered an early bird free agent with us and only us. This is why he has a no-trade clause, cause if we trade him, his bird rights that he's earned with us go away and wont transfer to the new team. However next summer, half the league (15 teams) will have at least 20m in cap space. For reference, the 25% max is 27.4m, 30% max is 32.7m and 35% max (which only KD is projected to be eligible for next summer) is 38.2m. Lakers using Kcp's early bird rights can offer him up to 25% max (they won't) with 8% annual increases (won't matter). We all know, including Kcp and Rich Paul, that LA isn't going to tie up their cap space next summer and if we retain Kcp with the intent of using his early bird rights to keep him, then his cap hold will take up 15.6m in our valuable cap space...which means we won't have room for not only KD or Kawhi...but we won't have enough room for even a 25% max player. So knowing all this, it would make no sense to retain Kcp thinking his early bird rights hold any value to us, let alone to him. Plus with the 15% trade kicker he has, that's further incentive to waive his no-trade clause and collect an additional 1.8m with a trade. Trading Kcp makes sense for all parties involved: more money to be had for Kcp next summer cause it's not going to be with us...more playing time for Hart and BI at the 2 spot...more PT for Kcp at his new location to earn that bag next summer (using his AD connec). Also by trading Kcp, he is now eliminated as a 1yr stopgap option for us...which means we're on great terms with Rich Paul to have the green light to trade dude away...but more importantly, we seem to be aware that our cap space will be used up as intended next summer...so no need to have Kcp's caphold on the books.
i would hope we wouldn't need his bird rights given his current bloated salary. that said, if we could re-sign him again next year to a much lower amount, i believe we'd full bird rights the following summer on a much smaller cap hold. i think if you time the signings right, you could sign kcp to say, a vet min, then sign the max guy, retaining kcp's rights for the next year. i think he owes us and could get rewarded on the back end.
Boy i'm loving all this KCP love from around the league...makes me think...should we be keeping him? ...no, no we shouldn't keep him if it means getting Ariza. Ship his a** out!
Btw, I just saw this and it's from Tania of the LA Times in her Dec 9th article after the trade rumors broke: I found it weird why we would be trying to trade dude and get in bed with Mintz again... Turns out we're not actively looking to trade Kcp...Rich Paul/Klutch is. Which means, you find him a team that wants him and will offer him more minutes and he's going to waive his no-trade clause since he and his reps want the move.
Decreased role and mins was expected. He no longer has the green light to chuck it light last year and with the emergence of Hart, we really don’t need to lean on him for a lot of mins. We’ve done right by him though, would he have gotten paid as much as he did these past two years otherwise? Probably not.
I'm fine with that. I wanted to move KCP for Ariza but now it's out of play so I'm ok with whatever happens. KCP is playing well now so it's less of an issue. Just keep him coming off the bench.
So it looks like Htown and Philly are the current buyers for Kcp. Melo to LA looks like it cost be in play, but Htown needs to find a 3rd team cause no current salary combination will allow us to acquire players on expiring deals from them. With Philly it could be WChandler or Redick (altho I'm not sure I would understand that swap). ATL is also rumored to have Baze available, but dude had a 19m player option next year... We can't have that on our books if he exercises it. But if Kcp triggers his 15% trade kicker, an even swap or Kcp for Baze would work. Plus Kcp gets to go back home to Georgia.
Say NO to Baze...especially with that player option. I don't see why we trade KCP unless it's bringing back a superstar? We need his salary to make things match....Id love to get Vucevic for him.
this is why i wasn't crazy about the proposed ariza trade: it was punting on the possibility of adding an allstar in february.
