Plus you can't offer him the max cause he loses his bird rights in the process. The most we can offer at that point would be 4 years 138M...compared to 5yrs 188M (via traded bird rights) or the supermax of 5yrs 219M (via reupping with SA and forcing a trade next summer)... That's alot of cheese to give up.

His best option is no doubt a trade here.

my line of thinking was leonard would just give up all his salary knowing we have $ rdy for him as oppose to pg last yr

Kawhi's new contract would offset the amount SA owes him via a buyout...so in that regard a buyout saves the owner money, but the contract would remain on the books as dead cap. SA can choose to stretch it or have it remain as is till it expires. His player option would also count as guaranteed money cause it is assumed the player would exercise it.

I think you're wrong on this Vash, I think only the amt of the buyout counts towards the cap.

    Per Coon's CBA FAQ:

    Regarding set off amounts:

So basically, SA would save about half of what he signs onto with us.

but leonard doesnt have any guaranteed money owed after this season n its say "still owed"...if leonard gives every penny back, hes owed nothing then

    18/19: 20M
    19/20: 21.4M (via player option)

He's owed 41.4M as guaranteed money cause if you waive or stretch a contract, player option and early termination ootions count as guaranteed money while team options do not.

Let's say he agrees to take 1.4M and give up 40M in a buyout, then the owners of SA give him that 1.4M but his 41.4 still is on the books as dead cap.

Now if he signs with LA for let's say his max amount as a 7yr pro (30M per), then SA's cap hit will be set-off roughly half of that (15m per) in dead cap. So out of the 40M (20m per over 2 years) in dead cap they have before he signed with LA, there would only be 5m (10M total over 2yrs) that SA has on their books via the set-off.

SA can also choose to let that dead cap come off the books in 2 years (span of Kawhis original contract terms) or they can have it come off completely in 5 years (via stretch).

At least that's my understanding of it...but I can double check later.

its fine, its unlikely to happen and its a bad look for us and leonard if he did that anyways...I'm sure Stern would come out of retirement and ban us from signing any FA for the foresable future ........I always just assume only the amount the bought out amt would count towards dead cap, thats how I've recalled seeing before.

I don't think the NBPA would allow Kawhi to waive his legally binding contract just to sign somewhere else. :D

That's not only unprecedented, but I think illegal. And there's no incentive for SA to make that move at all!

Didn't Derek Fisher convince the Utah Jazz to waive him just so the Lakers could sign him? It was when he wanted to be in LA for care of his daughter, who had eye cancer.

Regardless of the reason, its what we are talking about...waive and sign.

no, I'm not suggesting that, I'm suggesting Leonard would take a buyout for pennies if anything at all but as Real noted, its unprecedented and a bad look anyway

That's what I applaud about khmrp's suggestion... You gotta think outside the box. Otherwise our armchair GM'n is no better than Mitch and his mag-ick wand. (shout out to abeer for that one)

I think there's a massive difference between Derek Fisher, and his salary, and Kawhi and Kawhi's salary.

Which reminds me ... Yo .... sirron!! Where has the "You've Been Robbed" ... Pelinka gif gone? Shouldn't we be getting ready to break that bad boy out?

Just in case Zen's infamous "My team is owned and "ran" by morons" signature has been ill advised from the start? (post Jim and Mitch and Doc Buss)

EDIT: Even in spite of whatever the f*** that is above that crossed posts with this post .....

    :Kaream Surprise:

If Rob gets us LeBron and PG and keeps the very bestest of our best young players including maybe even Randle?
