There is a large population of NBA fans that are female, however in my experience on message boards, we see very few female members contributing. We want Lakersball.com to be different.

Here at LB we want to be as all inclusive, friendly and inviting as we can for all Lakers fans, and to that end, we as the Staff of LB would like to request all members be mindful of a few things:

    • Please don't negatively refer to players/men as having female qualities as an insult (ie "he's on his period", "it's that time of the month", "he's acting like a girl"). You're not just insulting the player, you're insulting women by associating them to the negative. There are lots of ways to express an insult, so just choose different words.

    • The smilies from CL won't be coming over to LB. Originally I looked for them when building the site and couldn't find them. But it's also been brought to my attention that the main ones everyone used are all guys. The smilies we have now are more gender neutral and I think that is a bit more inviting for all.

This isn't a heavy handed rule, but a request to our members to make this site better.

To all members, I ask that if you see someone making a comment that you feel is insulting to women, that you just give a gentile reminder to them to please not make such comments.

We want our female membership to grow and for LB to be the most all inclusive Lakers site around.

This is exactly the kind of thing Barns is talking about...

I applaud Barns for posting this. Here's to a fresh start towards a brighter future.

There's a GoogleAdServices ad that sometimes appears on the homepage with a woman wearing a tank top that says "With a shirt this awesome, who needs pants."

It's not nearly as bad as the porn ads that show on CL, but it may not be what you call "female friendly" or "family friendly".

The key is respect to all people. When people know you respect them, they don't mind a joke or two, because they know you can understand their pain. White, black, female, male, gay, straight, American, foreigner, whatever. If they don't know how you feel, expect the worse and go from there. Don't assume people know where you stand, and that you have privileges based on that.

No offense but why does the site has to be family friendly instead of work friendly? It's not like hardcore under 12 people want to post here.

Is asking if they changed certain rules to make the game more female friendly an inherently unfriendly question towards females? Debating the usefulness of those changes for the league and it's revenue...?

I am new, but the present seems fine to me.

@revgen 's point was that the shirt inadvertently objectifies women. When @Barnstable created this site, he wanted to create a culture that would be friendly and welcoming to all genders. It's not secret that the majority of posters on a basketball sports site is likely to be male, but any female would would like to talk Laker basketball (or anything else on this site) should feel welcome to do so.

If you find a woman that enjoys watching basketball with you, and she meets 70% or so of the rest of your relationship requirements, you should probably just marry her.
