This.. I don't love. Bass has been lost and wasted at C. I'd kind of like to see him at PF with Black at C. But then Kelly has earned playing time, and he isn't a 3.

I like it actually. If Bass is hitting that mid-range jumper he's a nice small-ball Center. Who would have thought we'd go small ball?

The thing is, Bass isn't much of a weak side blocker so when Ryan gets beat, it's a layup/dunk every time. We might actually want to switch Bass out on the perimeter and have Kelly inside who is surprisingly adept at blocking shots weak side.

It's not only bad for the defense though, it's bad for rebounding. We got killed on the boards with that lineup against the Warriors. You have to have a guy that can get some boards out there, like I dunno... Black maybe. I don't think the offense is good enough to offset the defense and rebounding.

It could be, but yeah we give up some things for the offense in that instance. And AGAIN who would have thought we'd say that to start the year?? :D :D

It depends I guess. I liked the Randle/Bass lineup. I liked the Bass/Black lineup too. I liked Kelly/Black a lot.

The thing is: we're going to give up rebounds a lot to the bench this season. I think our best hope is to just freaking run run run run run off the bench. We're undersized except for Sacre and I hope he doesn't play much this year. Can't help our height at this point, so might as well light the court on fire with Nick, Lou, Huertas, and Kelly out there chucking shots up.

Well I agree on Sacre, he doesn't help with rebounds either, he's tall and big but he can't jump, not as good a rebounder as he should be. If the offense is going to offset the defense with the bench, it's going to have to be damn good. If it's not doing well at points and we're getting killed on the boards, I don't want to see Byron just roll with it, I want to see Black thrown out there for boards. Black also works really well with smart passing PG's on offense, like Russell and Huertas, he will run the floor, he will make good cuts, and he will get lobs, it's not like he's bad for offense.

I agree with you, but Bass is the vet and he's done a good job too. He deserves the first shot so far. I'm not saying it's a perfect idea, but I don't know what else they could do. They've got 5 PFs and only 2 real Cs.

Oh Bass absolutely needs to play, he's been rock solid for teams for years now, and he didn't sign here to not play. He's a PF though, not thrilled with him at C.

Well then you sit Kelly, which I'm fine with honestly. I think Kelly brings a good skill set to the team, but I think Tarik's motor, toughness, and athleticism are also valuable. Kind of a pickle there, but I'd just make the call according to the situation. If the team we're playing goes small we SHOULD be able to match it with Bass/Kelly. If they don't, let's go Black/Bass and let those two muscle up for boards.

    Tough situation.

On the one hand, I love the idea of Huertas, Lou, Swaggy, Kelly unit as our second line, but honestly Black works better at center for that crew, but Bass as well as Kelly have played their way into the rotation.

I'd try running it with Bass and Kelly at first and let one of them play their way out of that rotation if they become a defensive liability.

Kelly's shooting and overall game works really well with Huertas so I do like him with the 2nd unit but you'd need a good defensive center then.

Spot on. Black might be the best rebounder on the team. We know Kelly can score enough to impress here and there, but that isn't what we need out of our bigs in that second unit. Young and Lou will carry the scoring load, just play D and rebound and we'd be looking solid.

Hmmm. Heurtas, Williams, Swaggy, Bass & Black should be our primary 2nd unit.. End of story.

What is the purpose of a long preseason if you are still trying lineups at the start of the regular season ? ( the "absolutely not sure" stands out for me)

So no Kelly even though Kelly has proven he deserves time with good shooting, decision making, and dynamic play?

I think there's more to the story.

All about matchups. Starters need to be able to handle anyone, but backups you can play based on who they are matched up against. Emphasize their strengths, and hide their weaknesses.

    Byron what the hell?

Play Black. The guy is instant energy, effort, can block shots, can finish around the rim, even showed some decent offensive skill.

Kelly is a scrub. I'm sorry, but the guy can't defend anyone, is slow, can't rebound, and for a supposably good shooter can't shoot either.
