    Developing Thoughts...

    PJ Hall
6'1" 310#, DI, Sam Houston State
    Highlights:
Thoughts on where he is: Raw, inconsistent.
Thoughts on ceiling: Could be an elite interior player, but there are so many question marks.
-Hard to find a comparison for him for a few reasons - his size/athleticism combo is almost unheard of and he's from a small school. Some see "some Aaron Donald" or Grady Jarrett, Sheldon Richardson.
Let's leave out Donald and focus on Richardson and Jarrett. Richardson has posted five seasons that were at least decent (83.8 last season, 27th best DI), including one that was absolutely ridiculous and landed him in the Pro Bowl. 19 sacks, 5 fumble recoveries, and 1 safety in five seasons. Grady Jarrett
Jarrett has improved in each of his three seasons, from 2 to 6 to 8 AV (and 87.1 at FF, 14th best in the league). Let's suppose Hall starts off slow, as a below average player; could he progress to being a league average DI with potential absurd upside? I guess so. And he's not exactly coming out of nowhere -he was 11th on PFF's top DI Prospects. He ran a 4.73 40 (at 308 pounds), which is ridiculous.

    Maurice Hurst
    6'1" 292#, DI, Michigan
NFL Comparison: Maliek Collins, Grady Jarrett, Larry Ogunjobi.
Where he is: He might already be a solid pass-rusher and decent run stopper.
What he might become: He could become an elite inside rusher.
Collins has posted an AV of 7 in each of his two seasons, but he rated poorly at PFF last season. We saw Jarrett in the Hall comparisons. Ogunjobi had a so-so rookie season, not managing to earn more than 1 start on a poor team. In his limited time, however, he rated at 82.0 on PFF, 34th best among DIs.
-PFF had him as the highest-rated Defensive Interior player they've ever seen. One of them called him a "top 5 pick." He's good against the rush.

Right now, I'm thinking that Hurst, our fifth rounder, is best-positioned (after Miller) to have the biggest impact in 2018.

^...about Hurst, we have been longing for an inside pass rusher to collapse the pocket to free up help on Mack (and now) Irvin who is being asked to solely rush. He could be that cog if he were to play more and he is fine health wise. He could also help Vanderdoes too if we go 4-3.

    Arden Key
    6'5" 238 EDGE LSU
Thoughts on where he is: situational pass rusher.
Thoughts on what he might be: elite pass rusher, with some bulk could be a three-down player.
    Hightlights:
    Honest Take:
Comparison: Willie Young, Danielle Hunter, Dion Jordan
Young has posted 24 career AV, with 32 sacks and 3 forced fumbles in eight seasons. His best stretch was a four-year span in which he picked up 27 sacks and 21 AV. He graded at 48.4 last year, unranked among Edge rushers. Hunter has stacked up 16 AV and 25.5 sacks in three seasons. At 82.6 last season, he was the 29th ranked Edge rusher. Jordan has struggled with drugs and has played in only 31 of the 64 games he has been eligible for, totaling 4 sacks and 4 AV, but his 83.6 in limited time is good.
-Key projects as a pass rusher who shouldn't be on the field in running situations until he adds some strength. He didn't show all that fast when he ran the 40, but he was dealing with injuries and weight problems. He needs to regain that speed and add strength.

There's a long interview (well, 12:00) from Key at the Combine. He has some personality. I really enjoyed watching that.

    Raiders Add Derrick Johnson
Posted a 77.3 grade last year, which was 33rd among LBs. It's a decent step back from Bowman (84.8, 11th best), and Johnson is even older with more mileage.

Still, he's three years removed from a Pro Bowl, and he has started 44 games over the last three seasons.

    Quarterback

    Derek Carr
    Connor Cook
    Josh Johnson
    EJ Manuel

Carr has won 18 of his last 30 games, has thrown for 236 yard per game in his career, and he has 82 TDs vs. 32 INTs in his last three seasons. He has also led the Raiders to 13 Game-Winning Drives, including 12 in the last three seasons. He's the starter, and he should elevate his game to the next level (4000 yards, 30 TDs).

Johnson has played in 29 games across six seasons (with four teams). He has started five games, losing all of them. He sports a dreadful 5:10 TD/INT ratio. The only passing stat that looks good is his 10.9 yards per completion. He has run well, with 274 yards on 44 carries (6.2 yards per carry). He does have extensive experience with OC Greg Olson in TB.

Manuel has started 18 games (6 wins), while appearing in 30 games across five seasons. He has thrown for 126 yard per game, connecting on 20 TDs vs. 16 INTs. He made a start for the Raiders last season, losing a game that should have been won.

Cook has the least experience (21 career attempts, 0 starts), but he has the most playoff experience with an abysmal 18-45, 161 yard, 1 TD, 3 INT performance against Houston.

It's hard to see what the Raiders will value more in a backup: familiarity with Olson's system (Olson), best now (Manuel, arguably), or best upside (Cook).
Calling it Now: Carr and Cook make the squad.

Raiders cut Armonty Bryant and...CORY JAMES (WTF?))

Well, James was a starter, but his PFF grade was 40.8, which was 71st among LBs. Maybe Gruden's staff is looking at the advanced data.

    Raiders Add
Marcus Baugh, TE, Temple (4.92 on NFL.com)
Saeed Blacknall, WR, PSU (4.95 on NFL.com)
Jason Cabinda, LB, PSU (5.00 on NFL.com)
    Alex Officer, G, Pitt
    Eddy Pineiro, K, UF (5.15 on NFL.com)
Nick Sharga, RB, Temple (willing blocker, not much of a runner, too upright running and blocking)
--My home state getting some love - Pennsylvania.

    Defensive Line

    Fadol Brown
    Tank Carradine
    Mario Edwards Jr.
    Justin Ellis
    PJ Hall
    Maurice Hurst
    Treyvon Hester
    Arden Key
    Khalil Mack
    Joby Saint Fleur
    Shakir Soto*
    Eddie Vanderdoes

Brown may have been on the practice squad last year with the Raiders, but he hasn't appeared in a game. He's an interesting prospect with low upside.

Carradine has spent four seasons with the 49ers, struggling through injuries. He has appeared in 44 of the 64 games he has been in the league for with only 8 starts, but 7 of those came last season. He has totaled 5.5 sacks and a forced fumble while amassing only 7 AV (3 last year). PFF had him at 78.1 last year, an average rating.

Mario Edwards had a pretty fantastic rookie season before missing nearly all of 2016. He returned in 2017 to have a mostly effective season. In three years, he has 30 games, 24 starts, 5.5 sacks, and 11 AV (6 last year) to his name. PFF had him at 72.8, 85th among defensive interior players. He and Carradine were teammates at FSU.

"Jelly" Ellis has played in 60 games, starting 41 of them, over the last four years. He has totaled 19 AV. His 80.6 rating was 45th best among Defensive Interior players, according to PFF. He's rated an above average player.

PJ Hall joins as a rookie. The Raiders seem high on him, perhaps as a run stuffer, but his size/speed combo makes him an interesting pass rusher as well. Over the last three years, players with Hall's NFL.com draft rating have been chosen around 74th overall. Sixteen of the seventeen players have played at least one NFL game (the lone player who didn't was selected 135th). Hall has pretty good odds of becoming a rotation player based on rating and draft position, to say nothing of his otherworldly athleticism.
Year 1 Average: 93% chance on roster, 11 games, 4 starts, 2 AV
    Year 2: 88% on roster, 10 games, 6 stats, 2 AV
    Year 3: 60% on roster, 10 games, 7 starts, 4 AV

Maurice Hurst has some serious health questions, but he has been cleared by the Raiders. He is a virtual lock to make the roster if healthy, and he has a chance to develop into an impact player. Players with his NFL draft rating were selected 66th on average, over the past three years. They have all been contributors at the NFL level.
Year 1 Average: 100% chance on roster, 13 games, 2 starts, 2 AV
    Year 2: 100% on roster, 14 games, 6 starts, 4 AV
    Year 3: 100% on roster, 10 games, 7 starts, 3 AV

Treyvon Hester appeared in 14 games for the Raiders last season, starting 1, and totaling 1 AV. His 76.9 grade at PFF was 64th best among DIs.

Arden Key sees himself as a pass rusher, but whether he does that from the LB spot or the DE spot remains to be seen. He has a lot going for himself in terms of overall potential, but he likely needs to add some strength (especially in his upper body) and some speed again. In the last three drafts, players with Key's NFL.com draft rating have been chosen around 106-113, which might make him seem like a bit of a reach. But those players have produced.
    Year 1: 100% on roster, 12 games, 6 starts, 3 AV
    Year 2: 100% on roster, 13 games, 7 starts, 4 AV
Year 3: 100% on roster, 11 games, 8 starts, 5 AV, 11% chance Pro Bowl

Khalil Mack will probably make the roster. He's only arguably the best defensive player in the league. Even in a "down" year last season, he received a 92.1 rating, 5th among Edge players. He hasn't missed a game or a start in four seasons, has 40.5 sacks, 48 AV, and more than 300 tackles. He's a beast.

Joby Saint Fleur was on Oakland's practice squad last season. He was signed to a Reserve/Future deal. He's probably a candidate to miss the cut.

Shakir Soto* was signed as a UDFA. I don't know much about him, but he likens himself to Aaron Donald and thinks of himself as fast despite running a half a second slower in the 40 than Donald (who blazes). He had a strong senior year with 10 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks. I would be shocked if he made the team, but he's a practice squad candidate.

Eddie Vanderdoes had a mixed bag of a rookie season, starting 13 of the 16 games he appeared in. He posted 18 total tackles with a 5 AV. Then he suffered a torn ACL in the final game of the season. According to PFF, his 56.5 grade was 105th among DIs, which is pretty abysmal. He will have to elevate his game, but he begins with a leg up if his ACL is good to go.

With 12 players fighting for these spots, there are going to be a few players who don't make it. I'll put them into three groups (but alphabetically within the groups).

Locks: Edwards (if healthy), Ellis, Hall, and Mack
Good chance: Carradine, Hester, Hurst, Key, Vanderdoes
Poor chance: Brown, Saint Fleur, Soto

Eddy Pineiro is an interesting kicking prospect. Could snatch that spot.

    Played two years at Florida:
He hit 56 of his 58 PAT tries, 96.6%.
He also hit 38 of 43 FGA, 88.4%.
His FG% in his final season was 94.4%.
He score 89% of the points he attempted to earn as a sophomore.
He scored 91% of the points he attempted to earn in his career.
He scored 94% of the points he attempted to earn as a Junior (final season)
He connected on all three attempts from 50+ in his college career and 13 of 16 at 40+.
He hit an 81-yard FG in pads (no helmet) in practice.

    Running Back

    Elijah Hood
    Marshawn Lynch
    Doug Martin
    Jalen Richard
    Nick Sharga
    Keith Smith
    DeAndre Washington

Hood, selected 242nd in the draft, appeared in one game for the Raiders. The Raiders seem to like him, but he faces a ton of competition to make the roster.

Lynch finished the season with 1042 yards and 7 TDs from scrimmage despite missing a game due to suspension. He improved as he shook off some rust, rushing for 625 yards and 5 TDs, catching 16 passes for 113 yards over his final 8 games. That projects to nearly 1500 yards from scrimmage over the course of a season. After receiving the 9th best PFF grade among RBs (84.4), he's surely the featured back for the Raiders this season.

When Lynch joined the Raiders, the similarities between his and Ricky Williams's situation were clear. Williams went on to two prime and four total productive seasons after turning 30. Lynch seems similarly on his way. Martin's joining the Raiders feels like Maurice Jones-Drew's. After piling up 950 carries in three seasons, MJD was almost done. He finished his age 29 season with arguably the worst rushing season for a running back in NFL history. Martin sandwiched two injury-plagued seasons between two dominant, high use season. He hasn't been the same since, averaging 2.9 yards per carry over his last two seasons (19 games). It's unclear why the 53rd-graded PFF Running Back (48.5) is on the roster, much less why the Raiders would keep him around if they can cut him and save money.

Richard has been a tantalizing prospect for the Raiders. As a rookie, he flashed solid return skills (23.6 per kickoff, 9.0 per punt), averaged 5.9 yards per rush, and hauled in 29 passes. He finished with 1391 all-purpose yards. In season two, he fumbled EIGHT times (likely crushing his PFF grade - which ended at 70.8), despite touching the ball only 117 times. His upside and affordable salary mean he'll be on the roster with a chance to prove himself.

Sharga comes out of Temple undrafted. He doesn't show much on tape. He seems like a good dude, a bit like a (less talented) Ben Heeney - on the other side of the ball. If he's on the roster, it's because of his versatility (he can longsnap and likes to tackle, apparently).

Smith takes the place of Olawale (who would have seemed like a Gruden guy). He has carried the ball only twice in four seasons (47 games, 4 starts). He has been targeted in the passing game only nine times. His 40.3 PFF grade was 13th best among FBs last season, and he does have a history of opening holes for a pretty good running back in Dallas. His 2016 blocking grade was 82.4, second best in the NFL for FBs. He's a virtual lock for the roster.

Washington had a slightly less disappointing drop off than Richard. After rushing for 467 yards and picking up 115 more on 17 grabs as a rookie, Washington struggled mightily in the run game (2.7 yards per carry). He was at least more active in the receiving game (197 yards on 34 grabs on 45 targets). His 56.0 grade was, however, quite poor.

Locks: Lynch and Smith will be the starters.
Good Bet: Richard and Washington will likely make the team and be rotation players. Add Martin if his contract doesn't allow cap savings on release.
Long Shot: Hood and Sharga will face and uphill battle.

    Raiders Roster Updates

    OUT
    Elijah Hood, RB
    Jobi Saint Fleur, DL
    Nick Sharga, FB
    Darius Hilary, DB

    IN
    Henry Poggi, FB
    Paul Buter, TE
    Chris Warren, RB

TR: Just yesterday, I noted that Sharga and Hood would face an uphill battle, and I was right. They're gone. I put Saint Fleur among the long shots. He's gone. So, do any of these players have a better shot of sticking with the team?

    Henry Poggi, FB
    Paul Butler, TE
    Chris Warren, RB

    Poggi is 6'2" 243#
    He repped 225 17 times, ran a 5.03 40
His 30" vertical also failed to impress.
Like Sharga, who was cut, Poggi is a willing blocker. He might be a better fit than Sharga, but I'm not sure he's better. He has some versatility, too, having played DE, TE, and then FB. I doubt he makes the team.

    Butler is 6'6" 252#
He did 19 reps, ran a 4.81 40, and had a 39.5" vertical. Better numbers.
He caught 32 passes for 381 yards and 5 TDs.
Coming out of a small school - Cal Penn.

    Chris Warren is 6'2" 247
    He ran a 4.69 40, pounded out 25 reps, and had a 33" vertical
Never had a big season, totaling 1400 yards from scrimmage in three seasons, but he average 5.6 per carry and 10.5 per reception, and he made it into the endzone 15 times. His dad was a beast, and I imagine Raiders fans remember him. He reminds me a bit of Richard - strong and good balance. Before an injury in 2016, he did this:

    Linebacker

    Jason Cabinda
    Shilique Calhoun
    James Cowser
    Bruce Irvin
    Derrick Johnson
    Emmanuel Lamur
    Marquel Lee
    Nicholas Morrow
    Brady Sheldon
    Azeem Victor
    Tahir Whitehead
    Kyle Wilber

    Cabinda is 6'1" 239 pounds
NFL.com graded him a 50/50 roster guy out of PSU. He didn't run a 40 at his Pro Day, but his vertical (33.5") wasn't bad, and his shuttle (4.28) and shuttle (4.28) weren't either. With 116 solo tackles and 285 total, 17.5 for loss, and 7 sacks at PSU, he at least posted some solid numbers.

    Calhoun is 6'4" 251 pounds
His 68.5 grade at PFF was below average, and in 19 career games with the Raiders, he has just 9 tackles, a pass defended, and 2 AV. He has been a disappointment after being chosen 75th overall in 2016.

James Cowser is 6'3" and 244 pounds
He hasn't started a game for the Raiders, but he has played in 22, including all 16 last year. His 18 tackles and 3 fumble recoveries have accounted for 3 AV. His 69.4 grade as an Edge Rusher was below average.

Bruce Irvin is 6'3" and 260 pounds
He has totaled 90 games, 69 starts, and 37 sacks in his career along with 39 AV. He has posted two solid seasons with Oakland, grading out at 77.0 last year (average, 48th among Edge Rushers). With 15 sacks in the last two seasons, that is his best two-year total.

Derrick Johnson is 6'3" and 242 pounds
He is no longer the Pro Bowler (four times) or All-Pro (once) he once was. But with 182 games, 169 starts, and 106 career AV, he brings a ton of experience. He has missed 19 games over the past four seasons, posted 15 AV over the past two, and graded out at 77.3 (33rd among LBs) last year.

Emmanuel Lamur is 6'4" and 245 pounds
In five seasons he has 71 games and 15 starts under his belt. He hasn't done much over the past three seasons, largely due to low snap counts (118 over the past two). He's a special teams player first. He was fairly effective (75.0 at PFF)

Marquel Lee is 6'3" and 240 pounds
He played in 13 games, starting 6, and picking up 15 tackles and a 3 AV. He posted a respectable 70.5 rating at LB (171 snaps) and was a heavy contributor on special teams (179 snaps).

Nicholas Morrow is 6' and 224 pounds
He played in 16 games, making 5 starts last season. He totaled 37 solo tackles and defended 4 passes on his way to 3 AV. He graded out atrociously (48.0, 55th among LBs) on 552 snaps and was a heavy special teams contributor.

Brady Sheldon is 6'5" 230 pounds
He was on and off the active roster last year, playing in 2 games. He played only 16 snaps, all on special teams.

Azeem Victor is 6'2" 240 pounds
His 4.99 grade makes him a candidate for release or special teams. He showed unimpressive athleticism. LBs with similar scores routinely went undrafted: Only 11 players over the last three years with a grade below 5.0 were drafted. They have totaled 180 games, 21 starts, and 23 AV. In brief, none of them have made much of an impact besides on special teams.

Tahir Whitehead is 6'2" 241 pounds.
He has played in 93 games, including 55 starts over seven seasons. After not starting his first two seasons, he has had four solid years - 4 INTs, 19 passes defended, 3 sacks, and 280 solo tackles (27 AV). His 79.6 grade at PFF was 25th best in the league and on 950 snaps.

Kyle Wilber is 6'4" 245 pounds
He has played in 89 career games in six seasons, starting 16 games, totaling 13 AV. He hasn't done much over the past two seasons (1 start, 3 AV). His PFF grade was abysmal (48.1). Most of his 390 snaps came on special teams.

    Locks: Bruce Irvin, Tahir Whitehead
Good Chance: James Cowser, Derrick Johnson, Emmanuel Lamur, Marquel Lee, Nicholas Morrow, Azeem Vitor
Long Shots: Jason Cabinda, Shilique Calhoun, Brady Sheldon, Kyle Wilber

    Wide Receiver

    Marcell Ateman
    Saeed Blacknall
    Martavis Bryant
    Amari Cooper
    Dwayne Harris
    Keon Hatcher
    Johnny Holton
    Jordy Nelson
    Seth Roberts
    Ryan Switzer
    Griff Whalen
    Isaac Whitney

    Ateman is 6'5" 216
He posted a 5.52 rating (NFL.com), giving him a chance to become an NFL starter. Players with his draft rating have had solid success in the NFL. All of them were on a roster through three seasons, with the following averages:
    Year 1: 9 games, 2 starts, 2 AV
    Year 2: 9 games, 3 starts, 2 AV
    Year 3: 10 games, 10 starts, 6 AV

    Blacknall is 6'3" 212
He was at 4.95 on NFL.com, an NFL training camp body. Only ten players with an NFL Draft Rating below 5.0 have been drafted over the past three seasons (including Raider Andre Debose). Nine made a roster, but they have totaled only 140 games and, aside from one player, only 4 AV (as returners). It is worth mentioning that Tyreek Hill is in this group. Hill is clearly the exception here.

    Bryant is 6'4" 211
He has dealt with league discipline issues, playing in just 36 games (16 starts) over his four seasons in the league. He has, however, totaled 126 receptions in the three seasons he played, 1917 yards, and 17 TDs. He's a big play guy, with multiple 80+ yard scores to his resume already. His 18 AV in three seasons is solid. He is also a solid punt returner. His 72.5 grade on PFF was 58th.

    Cooper is 6'1" 211
He has posted two excellent seasons before struggling last year. His three-year averages are 68 receptions, 934 yards, and 6 TDs. He has totaled 25 AV in three seasons (two Pro Bowl). After being a top receiver for two seasons, Cooper's grade fell to 51.9, 81st among WRs.

    Harris is 5'11" 206
Harris is mostly a special teams player - with almost 5000 yards in kick and punt returns (and 4 TDs), but he has fallen off significantly in punt returns, and he has been down the past two years for kickoffs. He hasn't added to his 12 career AV since 2015. His 57.4 grade at PFF was poor.

    Hatcher is 6'1" 212
He was graded at 5.38 in the 2017 draft. He has been on Oakland's practice squad. He has decent size but isn't particularly fast. He has caught 9 passes for 86 yards and a TD in preseason with the Raiders.

    Holton is 6' 190
Holton has played in 31 games, starting 1, and earning 4 AV. Last year, he caught 9 balls for 218 yards and 3 TDs. His 44.3 grade was, like so many Raiders receivers, pretty bad.

    Nelson is 6'3" 217
Nelson will be the most experienced Oakland receiver, with 136 games, 88 starts, and 550 grabs in his career. He has an excellent 80 AV. He did fall off each of the past two seasons, posting his worst yards per reception and catch% in years. But he was lethal, with 33 TDs in the last three years and even with 6 last season. His 74.9 grade at PFF was 50th best among WRs.

    Roberts is 6'2" 195
Roberts was a pleasant surprise in 2015 and 2015, combining for 10 TDs on 70 receptions going for nearly 900 yards. Last year was rough, as he averaged under 11 yards per reception (again), scored just once, and fumbled twice. His 11 AV have all been recorded in the past three seasons. His 42.1 grade at PFF was 111th among WRs. His contract isn't friendly for cutting, but if it were, he'd be gone already.

    Switzer is 5'8" 185
He had a versatile (and arguably misused) season in Dallas, handling 53 combined returns for 902 combined yards. He took a punt to the house and averaged 25.0 per kickoff return - not bad. He was scarcely involved in the offense with just 7 targets, 10 total touches, and 46 total yards. His PFF grade of 60.8 was below average.

    Whalen is 5'11" 190
He has been in the league for six seasons, has played in 43 games, starting 3. He has totaled 51 grabs, 532 yards, and 3 TDs. His career AV is 4. His PFF grade was 48.7. He plays a little special teams, too, and that could help him.

    Whitney is 6'2" 204
He appeared in two games for the Raiders last season. He has been back and forth between the practice squad and the roster. He did post a 50.9 grade, which isn't good. He contributed on 16 snaps on O and 16 more on special teams.

    Locks: Bryant, Cooper, Nelson
    Good Shot: Ateman, Roberts, Switzer
Long Shot: Blacknall, Harris, Hatcher, Holton, Whalen, Whitney
