Wait, I don't understand this. Why not wait till the $5.5 mil cap space is used up on someone else and wait afterwards to sign Lance with the mid level exception?

only reason i can think of to use space for lance is if svi's deal will be signed using space (instead of an exception) which is a smart move because it allows for more years at lower cost.

the other possibility is that they've determined there's not a single player who can help them that is worth more than the exception. the space was always going to have to be used one way or the other, as the room exception can't be used until space is exhausted (or it can, i guess, but then it comes out of space, so who cares).

plus, i'm sure stephenson's agent wanted something on paper, and things are starting to drag at this point.

don't worry, i'll be at the ready all year with a list of guys who signed for less than our space that could have helped!

    Oh I know you'll be prepared. :D

I dont see anyone worth it right now though and I think you're right on Svi. Personally, I would have used it on Brook, but that was clearly never offered. I think you just hold it now and hope there are some compelling buy outs durjng the season.

That is interesting. We have roughly 6.3m left and McGee would count as a 1.5m vet min cap hit even though his salary pays him 2.4m.

I'm thinking Lance and either Svi (rookie min) or McGee can be used to in that cap space and then we still have the room exception and other vet mins we can use.

We would be able to give roughly 2m more to a free agent if we choose to hold off on Lance, Mcgee and Svi right now. But the FO had been hitting us with a bunch of head scratchers of late.

Also Capela wants the max (25.4m) and Houston wants him at 15m per.... They're ridiculously far apart at this point.

It's getting to the point where if I'm Capela, I play for the QO. There's going to be a lot of money next summer.

A guy I'm becoming interested in is Montrezl Harrell. He's found a niche as a hustle/pick and roll athlete. He is a big leaper and could help with small ball lineups. He's an RFA but I'm hoping he gets his QO rescinded as the Clippers are in a bit of a roster crunch.

If we somehow get rid of Deng, and with all of our expirings, would we be able to afford Kawhi AND Capela (if he decides to take the QO and go unrestricted)?

    Imagine a starting lineup of:

    Zo
    Ingram
    Kawhi
    Lebron
    Capela

That may the best defensive lineup in the league.

If we trade away Deng for no salary, we'd have:

    LeBron- 37.4
    Lonzo- 8.7
    Ingram- 7.3
    Wagner- 2.1
    Kuzma- 2
    Hart- 2
    Bonga- 1.4
    (Svi?)- 1.4
    Cap holds ~ 4
    Total- 66.3

with a total of 41.7 or so available give or take a million or two depending on where the minimum salary ends up. I used a million as an estimate, but it'll probably be a little less than that.

Kawhi's deal (or anyone with 7-9 years of experience) would start at 32.4 million next summer. So we'd have about 10 million to spend after that. I don't think 10 million will be enough to get Capela.

Based on my calculations we would hold teams to 76.4 points per game...lol

Forbes, along with Bertans (when that gets finalized), can not be part of a Kawhi deal now till Dec. 15th.

Btw, Walker still remains unsigned and if he gets signed next, then Spurs seems to be closing shop and revisiting Kawhi trade talks in 30 days when the rookie deals can get moved.

Of course I did. That's a lot at the moment when we have no one to fill that cap space. There's no urgency to move Deng unless we get someone to fill the cap.

its gona be harder to move him next off season for no $ back imo this trade also gives us another 13mill in cap space this season....could use it to absorb an expiring by deadline for picks to offset the picks we give up

hmmm....i agree on lotto protecting the pick. but that would be pretty cheap to get off deng's deal. talk about leverage in trade talks for the rest of the year...
