We won't get the MLE if we're under the cap will we? Unless they changed the rule while I wasn't looking.

wont we go over with 2 max n resigning randle? it would be in our beat interest to go over so we can take advantage of that contract. theres 2 of them, the non tax and the tax one, im not sure which one is higher....how do you feel bout evsns fit here if 2 max n a randle does happen?

I'm no capologist, so I'm just not sure on the MLE. Evans would be great off the bench. But, if we get both LLLLL and PG, it will create a minutes issue for Ingram if we add Evans too. I'd rather keep Randle with any left over money.

We get the Room Exception, not the full MLE. The Room Exception is about 4 million, the MLE is about 8 million.

neither mle affects the cap, after 2 max u get birds rights with randle, mle is more of a tool to help cap strapped teams. I would play evans as the backup 1-3, ingram can still start @ the 2. hes already playing the 2 now from time to time

I believe you have to already be over the cap but someone might know more.

    Projected cap: 101M
    Projected tax threshold: 123M
Projected tax apron (Ie hard-cap): 129M

    Projected Non-tax payer MLE: 8.8M
    Projected Tax payer MLE: 5.4M
    Projected Room Exception: 4.5M
    Projected Bi-Annual Exception: 3.5M

Lakers will be far below the projected cap once we renounce our players rights (ie Brook, KCP, IT, Frye, Brew, etc cap holds) which gives us the ability to use one of any of the exceptions. However, once you use one, you can't use another exception during that season, other than any previous trade exceptions.

The apron of 129M is the value that determines whether a team can use the non-tax payer MLE vs any other exception. For example, If a team is sitting at approximately 120.2M in team payroll, then they cannot use the non-tax payer MLE of 8.8M, since that would put them right at or over the tax apron. After using the exception, the team would have to still be below the apron and if not, then they have to use an exception of a lower amount of the tax payer MLE. Another example is OKC: with a George max and player opted Melo, they are sitting at a projected 146M and would only be able to use the tax payer MLE and vet mins to distribute amongst 5 other players to bring their roster to 15 players. However if Melo opts in and George bounces, team payroll is 116M and they would be able to use any exception except the room exception, since the largest of the exceptions (non-tax payer MLE of 8.8M) does not put them over the tax apron.

Other rules are that the Bi-Annual Exception can only be used every other year, so for example, Houston used it this season on Tarik Black, so they can't use it again this summer.

Also if a team uses the tax payer MLE, they cannot partake in a sign and trade deal and vice versa.

    Hope that helps.

If we want to use the non-tax payer MLE, then you can only target a player that fits within that market value. So unless Bron or George are willing to take 8.8M, we most likely lose this non tax-payer exception since it would eat into whatever cap space we have. You can't use your cap space and then use up any other exception except the room exception. So for example, we had roughly 17M in cap space this last summer. We used it to sign KCP to a 1 year deal. Since we had cap space, we were allowed to use the Room Exception and still have that option to use on a buyout/waived player. However, we do not have the tax payer or non-tax payer MLE since you can't use up your cap space and then go ahead and sign another player with that exception. Its either the room exception and using cap space OR being over the cap and using one of either the tax payer, non-tax payer MLE or the bi-annual exception.

Lakers team salary including Cavs 1st round pick cap hold (1.5M) and renouncing all our free agents rights: 39M (62M of cap space)
Team salary if we stretch Deng and retain Jules' player rights: 40M (61M of cap space)
Jules cap hold via his bird rights: 12M
    Bron max: 35M
    George max: 30M

If George and Bron are willing to fit within roughly 60M of cap space, then we can hold onto Jules (via his 12M cap hold) and match any team's best offer. Let's assume Jules gets a max deal (approximately 20M) and we match, that means that it would be 8M more than Jules cap hold amount of 12M. That means we went 8M over the salary cap of 101M. So now we have a nearly maxed out Bron, George and Jules and our team salary would be roughly 109M, meaning we are about 20M away from the tax apron and we can still use the room exception.

However, lets say Jules agrees to the 8.8M MLE, then that means we're using our available cap space to sign him to that contract and his 12M cap hold drops off. This then gives us roughly 63M in cap to sign Bron and George. So now the Lakers have all 3 players and are sitting at 101M in team salary. We would still be able to use the room exception. However if we reported that we used the MLE to sign Randle, then we would lose the ability to use the room exception and would be hard-capped at 129M, meaning we would not be able to ever exceed that amount in team salary during the remainder of the year.

In a nutshell: its no benefit to us to use the MLE and our cap space....and that's the point. It does not allow teams to create a loop hole of using cap space and then using their exceptions.

Hope that was clear enough to follow.

Ugh, I hate it when Windhorst makes sense

I think both sides are right though, a lot of these kids today probably don’t care about the history of the Lakers. Westbrook didn’t, he’s a superstar in Oklahoma City. We CAN and should pitch what a top class organization we are, but the main pitch has to be basketball, what we have on the court. LA MAY matter to LeBron who wants to be in Hollywood as his career winds down though, and it may matter to George because it’s home. That’s really all we need it to matter to in the short term, because if we get one of them others will join.

So what I found out this week is that we almost traded for prime-Barkley, but Philly got cold feet and Pip was ready to come to us but we never tried to bring him in. Pair that with how Shaq and Kobe ended prematurely and the CP3 nixed deal....christ.

Just how many titles did we leave on the table?

Most players have probably dreamt of playing for the Lakers, so this isn’t surprising.

recent time has definitely told us that windhorst is right.

but all it takes is one.

all things being equal, i think they laker mystique might sway someone, but all other things are rarely equal. our on-court talent has been a joke for years, and i do think the tax issue is on some players' minds, too.

I say we stretch Deng, even though his salary stench will attach for 5 years, the Lakers will save cost on the buffet table with him gone

The tax issue wouldn't really apply to a max guy we bring in anyway. They'd make up the taxed cash in endorsements and opportunities anyway and I'm pretty sure they only get the (ridiculously high) California taxes on their home games. It's a hit but for stars it's not the end of the world.

The product on the court though is the closest we've been in years. Ingram and Ball and Kuzma are legit and with two max slots that means at least one other star as well. You add two max slots to what we're doing today, especially George and LeBron, and we're probably the 3rd best team in the West overnight with the ability to improve like no other team in that position. Houston, Philadelphia, anyone else would have to lose depth and wouldn't be able to add another max piece. We are in a unique position of strength. The truth is our FO just has to close the deal.

I hope no one in our organization had any part in planning this All Star weekend. And if they did, they need to be cut out of the process for the free agency pitches.

If they did, they need to lie and tell free agents it was all the Clippers organization that put it together.
