Damn, deescalating the situation, showing sympathy for the man's situation, getting him mental health help to try and fix the problem rather than carting him right off to jail. That's amazing.

That is waaaaaaaay out of bounds for a loss prevention unit. Those two can absolutely get fired for that.

To be clear that doesn't mean that these guys did the wrong thing on moral grounds, it means that legally they are not allowed to detain someone in that manner (at least in California). Being caught on camera roughing up a customer is a bad look for the company and all loss prevention personnel are directed to not engage physically with any potential thieves. Obviously engagement happens and if it happens off-camera, then there's a wink-wink-nudge-nudge about it, but those two guys could be in for a hell of a lawsuit even with the knife pulled on them.

Source: one of my best friends worked as a loss prevention leader in Target for many, many years.

I'm guessing it depends on the state you operate out of. I can't imagine Texas would have much of a problem with Loss Prevention detaining a thief.

Detaining and what's happening in ^^ that video are usually pretty different, but I imagine you're right. Many of the mid-west states probably wouldn't be too worried about a banged up thief. Even in California as long as the cameras are turned away, nobody is asking questions, but in this case the cameras are right on them. My main point is that the knifeman can and probably will hire a lawyer to try to press charges.

Loss retribution is what those guys are dishing out

I saw that. My understanding was the cop was suspended, right?

yes, him and another officer also. Apparantly he was a part time paramedic also and he was fired immediately from that job. It was just a mess what transpired and how he handled it. He wanted a blood test for an unconscious person he brought in and the nurse was following protocol and because he didn't get his way, proceeded to arrest her. Because of that the police will now have to interact with the hospital supervisors when they bring somebody in instead of the nurses.

Intentionally fanning the flames is not cool at all. That was probably a knee jerk reaction to his embarrassment. Cover his feeling bad about running when everyone else stayed? Might have felt like s coward as a big NFL guy, but that's hardly a situation to stick around in if there are bullets flying (allegedly)

Me thinks there is something else to the story. It seems appropriate for the press to call him out and grill him on this. You have to protect minority cops, all cops, from false accusations too.

    Me too.

I find it odd that he didn't have an ID. You're at a fight in Las Vegas and didn't bring ID? Very strange to me. Definitely more to this story. Unfortunately, we'll probably never know what it is.

Very long article but well worth reading. The NYPD never seems to learn or show a willingness to change. I still remember reading about the Abner Louima assault when I was in high school back in the 1990's.

Corruption mixed with “protect our own” mentality. Somehow they don’t seem to understand they are often protecting thugs with a badge that are just as bad as any they arrest.

Kinda makes you go back and think about that one cop that went off a few years ago calling out the LAPD for corrupted things.

    Scary.
