Anybody else follow Rugby Union or Rugby 7's? My boys started playing last year and got me to watching more and more. I don't know if I have ever seen a more entertaining sport than rugby 7's and 15's or union is fun to watch too.

The US is what the world calls the sleeping giant of rugby as if we ever start playing it as a nation we could be quite competitive. As of now the USA teams are climbing to new heights in terms of world ranking with the 7's squad being toop 5 iirc and as of today our union team is the highest they have ever been at 12. If you are at all interested in the sport the 7's tour starts next week in Dubai and with each game being only 15 mins long its not a big commiment. to wet your wistle here is a Perry Baker Highlight

    And Danny Barrett

How's the injury incident level in that sport with no protective gear? And do Rugby players think American football players are all a bunch of pusses because of all the gear?

Is the difference between them the number of players?

In terms of general injuries it's like any sport, but there is less head injuries than football. This is for two reasons. 1. Rugby has a very strict rules set when it comes to how to tackle, nothing above the shoulder, no just shoulder charging, etc and rugby culture dictates a huge emphasis on tackling right. 2. Rugby also doesn't have a helmet or pads which means you are going to lead with the head about one time and that will be it. Where as in the NFL players for head to head at every snap at full force. From people who have played both sports the generally report the hits are more painful in American football because pads let you hit a lot harder, but rugby is much more grueling physically and requires a great deal more stamina.

I think fans think like that in regards to pads and their is a certain realty that pads change the game, but most players I have heard/read respect the game. They really are two different sports that have very different color cencepts and skills.

Between 7s and 15s aka union? Yes. Aside from the time and strategy differences there are nuanced differences when it comes to kicking and certain rules.

There is also rugby league which has no ruck aka battle for the ball after a tackle, but that's not a very popular version of the sport.

So the Rugby 7s world series is currently going on. The series consists of 10 tournaments played trhough out 7 months. These tournaments each take place on a weekend in a different city, think Dubai, Paris, Sydney, Las Vegas, Hong Kong, etc. They generally pair tournements together due to geography and play two a week or two apart and then give a big break between the next two. You get a certain amount of points depending on where you finish and whoever has the most points at the end of the Series is the champ. Well this year for the first time ever the US has finished second in the first two tournies, Dubai and Cape Town, and is currently ranked number 1 in the world. It will be interesting to see how they do at the end of this month in New Zealand and Aurstalia and then Las Vegas at the end of February. Could be a huge year for them.

Here are some highlights for Cape Town including a gem by team USA and in case you missed it on sports center here is Danny Barrett shalacking some folks.

A few weeks ago at my boys practice we had a pro player from Ireland who just retired and moved to Texas roll up. I am a former athlete and a rather large fellow, but that dude looked like a beast. The thing about rugby is you have to do everything. Run, hit, ruck, pass, and do it for 80 minutes. Those guys have an unbelievable level of fitness.

Well if you want to check out some Rugby 7s, the most bananas sport in the world. The US leg of the Rugby World Series is on ESPN this weekend. Its played on a full sized field, but each side only has 7 players and they play 2 7 minute halves. Each team is made up of player that are all very fast too. Think of it as 7 man football with no dead time and each team is made up of nothing but running back, WRs, linebackers, and defensive backs. Its super fast paced and fun to watch.
