A side conversation in the Lebron thread made me think of this. If there is any Laker player from any era that you have watched that you could say would remind you of yourself, you could see emulating a style of play, or related personality wise, closely rooted for or felt a connection to, who would it be and why?

I would probably pick Derek Fisher. The player. Not the playa.

    :Fishwink:

Div III school. Hard worker. Always in shape. Got the most out of his talent. Solid locker room leader, steady presence on the floor, and prepared to succeed in the big moments when he had the opportunity.

I also suck at layups lol.

2nd is Mark Madsen. Pale, worked hard, can't dance, hustle.

Cooper... Taller than most yet was rail thin (still somewhat). Not a particularly deadly perimeter player but have a very good J though I did not shoot too much. Decent handles, decent hops. Loved playing D! Wore the knee high white socks and big wristbands on each arm too. I took it as complement when others told me that they hated playing against me. Mantra was you might score on me but I will make you work like hell for it.

Summer 1985... I was at Pasadena City College when they had the gym open. Coach George Terzian was outside. Peering in, I saw my dog inside. I asked Coach if it was indeed Coop. He smiles, retorts that it was and he was his "son"... He lets me and several dudes inside. Next thing you know, five on fives full court. Coop does a double take on me and picks me on his team. Won seven straight! Highlight of my pick-up games playing career.

I still have his book too...

Wilkes was my dude before Coop came on the scene...

LeBron just so I can vex you Sirron. :)

Seriously though... Kobe! My wife says I have a serious man crush on him. I do! Kobe the player is just such a unique blend of world class talent and ultra competitiveness. In my day I was ultra competitive like Kobe unfortunately I just had Placentia, CA level talent. Haha!

Sasha Vujacic. Both from former Yugoslavia, both started playing basketball as PGs. Both were primarily seen as shooters. I am (well, was, I am old now) much more athletic and shorter, he is a better defender (because I played zero D :SadPau2:). The real difference is that he ended up in the NBA, while my career was cut short by injuries - and small stature. But still, there are many similarities. I wish I could say NVE or Threatt or something like that but... nah.

I've always likened myself to Horry. And I loved him during his days as a Rocket as well.

Not the most talented guy on the court, but always in the right spot, at the right time. A smart player all around, defensively underrated, and had that "pogo stick" 3 point shot, although my shot was more like Fisher's rainbow. And I've been known to hit a few game winners in my day haha.

Byron Scott because I love shooting jumpers on the break but unlike Byron, I miss them all so I warm the bench like Billy Thompson

Very cool to hear how we all relate to completely different players in different ways. It’s part of what makes basketball so unique

So do you look down on your shoes while dribbling before you take the shot? Stu and Lantz once brought up this habit of Scott's which I noticed to be spot on.

Jim Chones once said the 4 spot was the least glamorous position on those Showtime squads but not in terms of value. His take was "they sell you that s**t just to be on a winning team and all you have to show for it is lots of bruises and gashes upside the head." A quote that has stuck with me to this day. Makes me chuckle since it is probably true.

Michael Cooper quite simply so I could pick on rookie Byron's a$$ - flick him in the ear - make him man up.

I'd say a fan favorite like Eddie Jones or something, but in reality I'm most likely Slava Medvedenko

my game probably resembled jason williams (white chocolate!) the most (though I played a lot more d). but the lakers have never really had a pg in that mold, so...smush parker? didn't root for him much, though.

maybe farmar. yeah, farmar. i could get off the floor a bit as a young gent.
