Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul, the greatest female vocalist ever in my opinion, just transitioned today.
OMG this is terrible terrible news I so loved Retha's music since I was a little kid especially the Muscle Shoals stuff.. Truly choked up about this.
...always associated that song with Dionne Warwick. Covered by 60's pop band Gary Puckett and The Union Gap which led me here... The first female artist to be inducted in The Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame.
All the time...keep on tryin' You're running out of food. And I ain't lyin'... Cracks me up every time...those lines. Otis my man! Totally different arrangements wise. Friggin' Bruce Willis... LOL!
Otis Redding, how fitting. He and Aretha are probably the two singers that, regardless of what they sing, could not help but to sound more soulful than anyone else. That style of soul is gone with that era, and now for sure with Aretha’s passing.
Agree. There are still mainstays around but they are retired or semi-retired... Smokey Robinson, Al Green, Tina Turner off the top of me head. Nowadays, some singers could be actually passable if they weren't resorting to histrionics by overemphasizing notes or phrases. Speaking of Redding...
When I hear this song, I think of Sam Cooke’s “Change Is Gonna Come”. Two different subject matters, but sonically I hear the same sounds. Another great soulful artist and song.
