So..post game show tonight on Spectrum. McGee, Bres, Worthy were talking Brook Lopez. All 3 seemed stumped as to why we wouldn’t sign him back, Worthy thought he seemed perfect next to LeBron. They showed 4 bigs left out there, 2 restricted, 2 unrestricted in Alex Len, Greg Monroe, Montrezl Harrell, and Clint Capela. Worthy said we don’t have the money to get Capela if he’s renounced (or maybe he said at all), and that he’d have easily taken Lopez over the other 3 guys.

This is where the point of my post comes in and why I posted this in the Melo thread. Bres jumped in and said he thinks we are set to roll with this roster, with our 3 centers being McGee, Zu, and Wagner, and that he believes or it’s possible that 4/5 mil is being kept aside for Melo when he gets bought out. I really, really hope that was pure speculation on his part and he doesn’t know anything, because he went on to state the case that Melo is a 3 point shooter we lack, that since the ‘12 Olympics he’s become a spot up 3 point shooter. When he said that Melo was a 3 point shooter, the look on Worthy’s face was priceless, like “wtf, have you seen his percentages? You think he’s a spot up shooter now?!”. I don’t want Melo, just..no. I had hoped not signing Brook was the FO having a better plan, but if that is it, adding a “name” that LeBron likes, I’m not going to get down on a FO that that just landed LeBron, and drafted well yet again, but that’s not smart. Can’t defend, volume shooter at bad percentages, old, not what we are going for here. Also, no way in hell McGee, Zu, and a rookie that needs to add muscle make it through the whole year holding down the C spot for us.

No idea how he is a Lakers studio host. He is painfully idiotic.

He and McGee seriously make me cringe when they do anything. I wish they would dump those clowns and bring in some damn talent.

It could be worse. The could bring back "coach" Miller. But bres adds nothing. Not sure why he was hired.

Houston: over the cap and at 118m before a potential Capela signing (QO is 7m), they're already projected as a tax payer. They can't trade Anderson (20m) alone cause any incoming salary would max out at 25m and Melo makes 28m. So it would have to be Anderson/Nene (combined 24m for 2018/19 season and combined 25m for 2019/20 season). Would OKC take on all that salary when they're trying to move off the repeater tax. So the trade route is likely out, meaning Melo would settle for a buyout and have the miniMLE (5.3m) as the only realistic way to get to Houston.

LA: Since we're at 11 players officially on the roster (McGee & Lance are signed last using exceptions one we are capped out) that means we're sitting at 5.5m in cap (including the incomplete roster spot charge of 840k)...but in actuality, once that 12th player gets added, that roster charge pretty much transfers as the remaining cap used to sign that player that makes for a complete roster...so our remaining cap is 6.3m. That money obviously beats out Houston's miniMLE amount.

LA can also go the trade route. We have 5.5m in cap, so we can use that to absorb some of Melo's deal, meaning we only need enough outgoing salary to trade for 23m of Melo's deal. Trading just Deng (18m + 5m) brings back Melo in a legal trade. Add some draft pick considerations to the deal and that allows us to get off Deng, while OKC only has to take on 18m for the 2019/20 season, but doesn't have to deal with nearly 10m in dead cap for the next 3 years in a Melo stretch.

Also, Deng on the books vs Melo on the books saves them 10m in team salary and they would pay 89m in taxes (for a 25m hit being over the tax theshold) vs 144m in taxes (for a 35m hit being over the tax threshold). Total savings for taking on Deng is 65m for the 2018/19 season. Granted Deng's 19m is still on the books for the 2019/20 season, but the tax threshold is projected to rise to 132m for the 19/20 season.

I would definitely do a DengDump for Melo and make it worth OKC's time by adding multiple 2nd round draft considerations and even going as far as 1st round pick swaps.

Losing out on BLo, play Melo as a stretch 5...he gets to start and we fill in a team need haha

It's not a bad idea, but if I'm OKC, why not just waive Carmelo?

Right now they're at 159 million. If they waive Carmelo, they end up at 140 or so and save 122 million.

Deng puts them way back up in the 140-150 area and they'd have to that enormous bill again. Unless they trade for Deng and then waive him, but that'd still cost them a significant amount. I'm not sure there's a marriage here.

Yeah only way I'm taking Melo on thsi team is if we are dumping Deng and 2 firsts to the Thunder. That would be a massive win for us as we'll have crazy amount of cap room for the following summer and it puts even MORE pressure on the Spurs to deal Kawhi to us.

I thought that would work but I think I read somewhere that the Thunder would save 50 million vs 100 million if they did that trade. Anyone know if this is true?

A marriage is trying to be consummated, otherwise they would have stretched Melo already.

Melo had a no-trade clause and if it's between us and Houston as his desired locations...OKC is obviously looking for a favorable trade....meaning that they're trying to get a deal to save money in not setting for a buyout/ stretch.

OKC is looking for at least some value via trade. They can get pick compensation from us to take on a cheaper Deng contract (10m) which would lead to a tax savings of 55m....so a total of 65m if they swapped Melo for Deng.

The exchange comes at the expense of them adding nearly 19m of Deng's expiring deal to their 2019/20 books, but the tax theshold is projected to climb to 132m next summer, so stretching/buying out Deng next summer is much more feasible.

As it stands, OKC team salary without Melo is at 132m...so right at the tax theshold. If they stretch Melo this summer, that 9m dead cap will lead to 26m in luxury taxes. Meanwhile, stretching Deng next summer will lead to 15m in taxes.

So over the course of these next 2 summers, OKC can gain a net of up to 75m in savings if they choose to trade Melo and stretch Deng next summer instead.

Thanks Vash, that was perfect. Looks like that deal works for both parties. Let's hope Carmelo doesn't put an ultimatum that he has to start to allow the trade to happen. Then again, Lakers could just say yes and then do what they want once they get him, haha.

I would love to clear Deng off that last year contract so we can have a crapload of money for the summer of 2019.

Or they could just stretch Melo and save 120 million or something this summer and if the luxury tax goes up again, then they're looking at the same sort of benefits as if they'd done your trade.

I'm sure the Rockets are trying to get something done, but I don't think trading for a worse contract is one of them. I think they're haggling on a buyout number probably and then looking into whether anyone will give up any kind of value.

I'd love for you to be right because it means we're out of Deng's contract even if it means taking on Carmelo, but I'm just not sure I see the logic the way you are.

I couldnt careless less what Melo wants. If you can unload Deng's contract for him, do it, then if he gets whiny, dump his a**. The goal is to rid of that last year on the deng contract. I hope it works.

Trevor Ariza played defense and knew his role. Melo scores points. Houston has a Capela problem. Melo and CP3 will get along, i doubt he gets along with Harden. Still do not see how he and MDA merge again. Melo should go to Miami. He could actually start and go to the playoffs.

2018/19 (as books stand, 13 players on payroll making 159m in team salary and Okc HAS to have 14 players on the roster before the season begins. Incorporate that logic in a Melo/Deng stretch).
Melo unstretched: about 156m in taxes (about 317m in total team salary and taxes)
Melo stretched: about 61m in taxes (about 204m in total team salary and taxes)

Deng unstretched: about 99m in taxes (about 250m in total team salary and taxes)
Deng stretched: about 52m in taxes (about 193m in total team salary and taxes)
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2019/20 (as books stand, 9 players on payroll leading to 132m in team salary with the tax threshold also projected at 132M. Singler is making 5.4M, but is on a non-guaranteed contract...safe to say that OKC probably waives him. Patterson is also on a similar deal but has the ability to opt out of his player option. So lets assume both those contracts remain on the books)
Melo stretched: about 24M in taxes (with only 9 players on the payroll and they would need to add a minimum of 4 more players)

Deng unstretched: about 60M in taxes (with 10 players on the roster and they would need to add a minimum of 3 more players)
Deng stretched: about 15M in taxes (with 9 players on the roster and they would need to add a minimum of 4 more players)
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Clearly the most effective way to save money is to trade for Deng and stretch him, cause even they just stand pat and stretch Melo, his nearly 10M in dead cap will affect the next 2 summers in leading to more luxury taxes. Might as well get some cheap assets (draft compensation) in taking on Deng and stretching him instead of having all that dead money on your books with a stretched Melo and having only a huge tax bill to show for it.
