    Could go here

    lakersball.com/threads/lakers-head-trainer-gunnar-peterson-discussion.2728/

Or in this thread, or you can always make a new thread. We have a lot of “X Discussion” threads, but we aren’t as strict as CL about new threads, there’s no rule against making one for an interesting article. If you did, and there was an existing thread, it could always be merged after the fact. Oh and we also have a general training staff thread for any new hire news in the future

whoever pays a player who was not unanimously worth the max before snapping an achilles, the max afterwards, is just plain foolish

the fact that DMC thinks he's owed that is laughable

a good ego is required to be great, but some perspective on your place in the food chain or the pecking order of current best players seems to be in order

    • Everyone thinks you are a cancer
    • You aren't considered a winner
    • You've had a potential career ending injury
    • Your team improved once you left the lineup
    • Your team didn't miss you
Yep. Max money while you sit and watch 4/5 of the year, and then assume a bench role. Sheesh!

Can someone clarify something for me?

Assuming LeBron and Paul George agree to come to the Lakers at their max contracts we can offer them, and we can’t offload Deng to another team, would we have any cap space at all left over?

What I’m trying to figure out is what’s Randle’s qualifying offer that we need cap space for to be able to later on match any offers in resticted fre agency?

I think we have to renounce him in order to max 2 FAs...

And the only way to somehow keep Randle is to try to offload Deng and take no salary back, prior to signing two max players correct?

If we were to offload Deng, Is it really that we have to take no salary back or is there space for a bit of salary to come back?

Randle's qualifying offer is 5.7 million, but his cap hold is 12.5 million and we're mostly concerned with his cap hold.

To sign both LeBron and George and not trade away Deng, we'd have to renounce all cap holds in Randle, Lopez, Thomas, Frye, and Pope. Then we'd have to waive Deng.

That would leave us with roughly 30.5 million in salary and minimum cap holds. After signing LeBron and George to max deals, we'd have somewhere around 3-5 million left over depending on what we do with Ennis, Zubac, and whether or not we keep our draft picks.

However, if we traded away Deng and took back minimal or no salary we could keep Randle's 12.5 million dollar cap hold, sign both LeBron and George, and have maybe a million or so before the cap. It would be very tight, but is possible. It's even possible to make it if we keep the #25 and only use future picks to trade Deng (we'd have to waive Ennis and Zubac and possibly Bryant).

Getting rid of Deng's contract can dictate everything without giving up anymore talent. That is key. The Lakers have gotten rid of Russell, Nance and Clarkson to get to where they are salary cap wise. As of right now, they haven't really given up anything major. Russell turned into Kuzma. If anything, the Lakers have come up on their unloading of players.

What date would the Lakers have to renounce all cap holds? Anyone know?

Cousins followed up his unfollowing of the Pelicans by following Julius, PG13 and IT. Everyone coming to the Lakers. Just split the room exception between DMC and IT (Half kidding but for real).

I’d take those two along with Julius/PG13 if we literally struck out on everyone else and we gave them fat one year deals with absolutely nothing guaranteed going forward.

Thank God Mitch isn’t here anymore. You get a 4 year deal, you get a 4 year deal. 20 million per for all!

That’s as brilliant a negotiation tactic from Cousins as I’ve seen in this modern NBA. “I know, I’ll unfollow the Pelicans and follow Randle and PG, that’ll scare me up a bigger offer!”.

You don't even need to dump Deng... If you stretch him, Lakers have roughly 40M in team salary (including Jules' cap hold). That gives us about 61M in cap. George and Boogie's maxes are 30.3M each. We'll have enough cap to give them their maxes while retaining Jules.

There are worse contingencies and thank god Mitch ain't here to explore them.

Very interesting. I would say maybe he worked out with them somewhere since Julius and George share an agent, but I don't think Boogie is cleared to work out.

What I COULD see happening is the Lakers giving him a one-year, low money offer so that he can rebuild his career here. Instead of bringing back Brook Lopez, maybe the Lakers spend all their money and give Boogie the room exception? I know he wants that max money, but I'm willing to bet nobody is giving it to him if the Pelicans aren't. So if that's the case, what better way to rebuild himself and his image than to ring chase with LeBron/George in LA?

Of course, if the Lakers skip (or lose) on the LeBron race, there's more money to be had. I could see something like: Waive Deng, Max George, split the rest of the pot between Boogie and IT for a year (no options), then give Julius some cash. I don't know if that'd be enough to keep a full max slot in 2019, but it'd be a solid team.

Look at George Cousins and IT all together in the picture! Too bad you can't see IT on his tippee toes behind Draymond.

I think you missed my joke. I said behind Draymond, not DeRozan. It was a short joke.
