The NBA Lowlights thread is back. We'll probably see regulars like James Harden, Rajon Rondo, and Demarcus Cousins make appearances. For now we'll start with Russell Westbrook. Apparently Draymond Green is not the only player who likes nuts. https://www.yahoo.com/sports/news/r...ous-caldwell-pope-in-the-groin-060954817.html
Uh oh, maybe someone else can post a link ....am on my phone. Phil just made LeBron's list according to Yahoo story for using the word posse for his friends. Race card is out. OK, here it is: http://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/16/s...on-james-phil-jackson-posse-comment.html?_r=0
...won't be long until a JaVale McGee post makes it way to this thread. He had one already on Shaqtin' A Fool with the Warriors. Blocked the ball through the rim.
Preposterous argument. Not only is the historical definition of "posse" not remotely racist or negative, but the much more common use of the word is completely and utterly neutral and an apt description of Maverick Carter. I believe firmly that Maverick Carter was offended because he's a millionaire that has done well for himself despite first getting a leg up from LeBron. I'm sure he feels like his own man and hates the accusation that he's only rich/famous because of his buddy no matter how true it may be. Carter went on to say he doesn't think Phil is a racist and respected him as a coach. LeBron is the one that doubled down on "posse" being a racial tag which is idiotic.
Lebron just wants some media attention. What is more concerning is Melo coming to his defense, a shot at Phil perhaps. Overblown situation from a media diva.
I'm with Lebron on this. Usually you'll use a term like "team" or "entourage". Most players have a team or an entourage, nothing unusual about that. First off, why is Phil even speaking on it? He has his hands full mismanaging the Knicks and running them into the ground. Also posse definitely has a racial connotation to it if you look at it in modern terms, and if Lebron believes it does, so be it. I don't know what Phil intended by it, but I can definitely see why Lebron would be bothered by it and I don't blame him it at all, considering everything that has been happening in this country recently. Now as far as Lebron is concerned, he had his opportunity to speak on the murder of Tamir Rice in his own city and he took the coward's way out, so I only have so much sympathy for him.
i think there was a period of time in the 90s when the term "posse" carried racial connotations, but i'm not sure that has persisted in any way. it's an odd term to just pull out of the air, though. i mean, "group" would have sufficed.
The definitions of posse (as used by Maverick Carter): USA historical: a body of men, usually armed, summoned by a sheriff to enforce the law. British historical: the body of men in a county whom the sheriff could call to enforce the law. informal: a group of people who have a common characteristic, occupation, or purpose. informal: a group of people who socialize together, especially to go to clubs or raves. Now which of those is exactly racist? Which of those is "ghetto" (again the word used by Maverick Carter)? I will absolutely agree that the word is demeaning to Maverick personally because it belittles him personally as a businessman. Sure he got a leg up from LeBron, but since then he's built his own business and put in the work necessary to be successful. He is no longer just a hanger-on to LeBron like so many of Iverson's past associates. However, there's no racial connotation to be made there unless you're looking for one. It's not a race thing, it's a pride thing. It's a person thing. In that respect, sure Phil was a jerk but hasn't he always been? This isn't news. The Insane Clown Posse wants their posse back.
"The players have been dressing in prison garb the last five or six years ... all the stuff that goes on, it's like gangsta, thuggery stuff," the Los Angeles Lakers coach, Phil Jackson, wrote on the website of the sports network ESPN.
oh i knew...i just thought referencing stephen jackson at this point was fun. and yeah, phil has gotten away with some classist (racist?) statements over time. he's culturally biased, i suppose would be the term. i guess we all are to some extent, but one can be more careful with his or her choice of words in public forums.
Why is it laughable? I've explained my point of view without using adjectives like "laughable" and "asinine". I don't know Phil, and I'm not going to accuse him of anything, but I understand Lebron and Maverick Carter's point of view completely.
I used the precise argument that Maverick Carter used. Not even the person who was initially offended called it racial. The only person who did was LeBron and the media who picked it up. The outrage is not about race, if it's anything specific it's probably classist, but it's not. It's exactly what I said and I stand by my argument. Maverick Carter didn't even call it racist and it was directed at him.
